Save electricity and reduce energy costs with CFL light bulbs

The majority of American households are still using light bulbs known as incandescent or Tungsten bulbs. While these bulbs are generally very cheap ($0.50 or less for a 75W bulb), they are inefficient and energy-wasting, with a relatively short life span. Fortunately, more and more people are using energy-saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, and the government is mandating the use of CFL and other energy-saving bulbs. In 2007, President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), which includes the Lighting Efficiency Mandate that seeks to phase out the use of standard incandescent light bulbs by 2014 and improve lighting efficiency by more than 70 percent by 2020. In other words, over the next few years, you’ll see Tungsten light bulbs disappearing from stores and more and more energy saving bulbs replacing them. This is good news!

Which bulb should you choose?
For most household lamps, coiled CFL bulbs are the best solution. They come in various power ratings ranging from 7 watts to 55 watts or higher. These bulbs will have 2 wattage number specifications: the actual wattage numbers refer to the actual power consumption and the equivalent wattage (Intensity) of a Tungsten bulb, e.g., 40W CFL bulb (power consumption) – 150W Tungsten or incandescent equivalent. If you buy them in a multipack, the price per bulb for a 60 watt equivalent can be less than $2 each. Besides intensity, there are several things to consider:

BULB LIFE: The typical life of CFL bulbs is longer than 7000 hours. On the other hand incandescent or Tungsten bulbs life is less than 2000 hours. The extended life of a CFL, in addition to the energy savings, makes investing in these devices a very wise choice.
Color temperature: The color temperature of a bulb, indicated in degrees Kelvin (K), refers to the color spectrum emitted. 5500K is approx. the color temperature of daylight. This color of light is typically used for “task” lighting and is desirable for reading and various work areas. Typical locations for this color temperature are kitchen, laundry room, garage, basement or a workspace. For other areas in the house, such as living room, family rooms, bedrooms, or bathrooms, we recommend a “warm” tone, around 3000K.
Note: There is no standard yet in naming the color temperature of CFL light bulbs. The same terms can mean different color temperatures to different manufacturers. Generally, a bright white is called “daylight” and refers to 5000K to 5500K color temperature; a softer white is often called “soft white” or “warm white” and refers to around 2700K to 3000K. Above 5500K, the bulb will emit a blue tint, and in the 3000K range, a yellow tint. However, it is best to locate the Kelvin number on the bulb package, which is often hard to find. You have to look for small print on the front or back of the package.
Substituting a CFL in a light fixture or lamp: The metal wire structure that surrounds the bulb and supports the lampshade is called a HARP. It is likely that the harp in most table and floor lamps is too small for a CFL bulb as these fixtures were designed for a smaller Tungsten bulb. If you try to substitute a CFL bulb, you might have a fit problem. This is particularly true when you buy a 3-way energy saving bulb that lets you adjust the intensity.
