While most people are spending their quality time in from of the television watching reality tv, I spend it watching previously cancelled cartoons. Futurama was cancelled originally back in 2003, but has since been resurrected by Comedy Central for a 16 episode season in 2008. Prior to this new season, there will be a Futurama DVD in the same vein as Family Guy Presents: Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story. With no further delay, here is the trailer for Futurama - Benders Big Score.

Wait, I've Heard That Before

I do this from time to time. I hear a song and swear that I've heard it somewhere else. Sometimes I can't quite match the two songs together, but sometimes I nail it. This blog is a perfect medium to chronicle this revelation.

Band of Horses' second full-length comes out this coming Tuesday. The album, titled Cease to Exist, is an amazing follow-up album and I recommend it to everyone who loved their first and anyone who has yet to hear the band. Anyways, please check out their MySpace page and listen to a song off the album called "Detlef Schrempf." Yes, it is named after the Sonic's basketball star.

Now, after you've soaked that in--especially the piano--take a quick listen to a song by the Littlest Man Band called "Wrong Bed." That link should bring you up their discography, where you can click "Listen Now" and skip through the samples of the album--"Wrong Bed" is number eight. Now it is a shame you only get to hear a sample, but you should be able to get enough.

How similar is that? Now I'm not going to cry party foul on Band of Horses part since it is a pretty simple piano line, but just noting. "Wrong Bed" appears on Littlest Man Band's Better Book Ends, a pretty good album that came out in 2004. And for those of you who don't know, Scott Klopfenstein is the lead man for Littlest Man Band and also a long time, big part of Reel Big Fish.

Bloc Party on Conan Tonight

Bloc Party will be performing a new song called "Flux" tonight on Conan O'Brien, which airs at 12:30 a.m. EST. The song will be released as a single on November 12 and it can be pre-ordered here. No news yet on if it is part of a full-length or EP down the line.

The band's last release, A Weekend in the City, came out in February of this year. Four songs from that album are currently available on their MySpace. It was one of the better releases of this year, so if you haven't heard it yet I would give those songs a listen and pick up the album when you get a chance.

Here's hoping "Flux" is awesome.

Edit: It is awesome. Here's proof--Bloc Party at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 3.

Chris Carrabba Doesn't Ruin "El Scorcho"

Dashboard Confessional's newest full-length dropped on Tuesday, which after one quick listen I thought something terrible happened to front man Chris Carrabba's voice. Maybe I just haven't listened to Dashboard in quite sometime, but I'm currently listening to him as I type this and there seems to be nothing wrong. Obviously a bit more produced than his older stuff, but I originally thought Carrabba went through puberty a decade and a half late.

The real point of this post is that the band currently has a pretty solid cover of Weezer's "El Scorcho" on their MySpace page now. While you are there you can listen to their new album and let me know if I'm not the only one who had that odd first reaction.

The cover along with various other ones can be found on the album The Wire Tapes: Volume One, which is only available at Dashboard shows. The nearest one being at the Palladium in Worchester, Mass. on November 8 and 9. Who knows who is opening though--their MySpace page and official website are useless. Either way, the track listing for The Wire Tapes is as followed:

 1. "Theme From Volume One" (They Might Be Giants)
 2. "Valens" (The Movielife)
 3. "El Scorcho" (Weezer)
 4. "A Year in the Past, Forever in the Future" (Grade)
 5. "Overkill" (Men at Work)
 6. "If I Needed You" (Townes Van Zandt)
 7. "Angels of the Silences" (Counting Crows)
 8. "Catch" (The Cure)
 9. "Pretty Pathetic" (Smoking Popes)
10. "Crazy" (The Afghan Whigs)
11. "Better" (Regina Spektor)

The Good Life: A Good Time

While it is difficult for some people at Central to leave campus and travel to go see a good show, I have the advantage of having a nice car and bunch of friends that love going to shows.

The weird thing about seeing The Good Life last night was the fact that it was my first show in ages that I've gone to that I wasn't part of the press and actually got to enjoy the show without having to jot down notes and spend the night behind my camera lenses.

I got off from work around 3 in the afternoon and headed straight up to UConn to pick up my friends who bought the tickets. After some quick TV watching and basketball we started our adventure to Boston's Middle East Club.
After doing 65 mph down the Mass Pike out of fear of getting another speeding ticket, (92 in a 65 in February of 2004) we finally arrive at the Riverside Train Station and get on the "T."

After about 15 stops, we get off, search for some quick dinner and hop back on the train to the club. When we get to the venue and present our tickets and ID (18+ show) we get attacked with a giant black sharpie. With two large black Xs on my hands and absolutely no chance of getting a drink tonight, I head down stairs and scope out the place. Small floor area, decent size crowd and two bars flanking the floor. Serving Pabst Blue Ribbon Tall Boys and assorted mixed drinks, I feel the need for a cold one which I will never get.

The music started around 8:30 with Fourth of July, a five-piece indie band out of Lawrence, Kansas. They were playing their last night with The Good Life and decided to just have a lot of fun. With a smooth voice and poppy instrumentals, they played really engaging music for 45 minutes. I am going to check them out later today and see what I can scrounge up online.

The music took a complete face plant after this though. Luke Temple was up next with his horrid combination of acoustic guitar and douchebaggery. The weirdest thing wasn't his uncanny ability to sound like a even wore Jack Johnson, but the fact that the crowd was having conversations that were much louder than his music. He basically failed all the way around. The sentiment to wrap this up was, "It's like going to coffeehouse, but I'm not high and there isn't any coffee."

The headliners for the night was The Good Life, one of my personal favorite bands and one I haven't been able to see live before last night. The great thing about seeing them live is the stage presence of front man Tim Kasher. The crowd always loves him and he loves them back, unless your a jerk frat-boy type that won't stop yelling in between songs. Then he hates you as does the rest of the crowd. There a few of those types of people that drink too much and can't keep their mouths shut. Beyond that, TGL played an absolutely amazing set that covered everything from their new album Help Wanted Nights to their first album Novena on a Nocturn. After the first hour, the band left the stage to a roaring chant for an encore, to which they quickly answered with another 30 minutes of music. This time around it involved some more beer and a round of shots from the openers Fourth of July. This made for a drunken, fun mess. Exactly how I would want to see The Good Life.

The club cleared out quickly after and the trek home began. The worst part of any night, especially at 1 a.m. I really need to stop going out of state for concerts on school nights cause it kills my attendance in my class and overall makes me tired. Oh well, it's too damn fun and I'll do it again for Say Anything and Bright Eyes in November.

People to See, Places to Go - 10/2

This week seems to be pretty low on the quality side of things, but there are still plenty of things to do in the area. Check back here every Monday for a look ahead of what is worth spending your time and money on.

October 4
Cartel @ the Webster Theater
I don't want to use the term "guilty pleasure" when describing why I enjoy this band, but it is pretty tempting. Either way, this is one of the best pop-punk outfits around these days and The Honorary Title is opening up.

Exposure @ Cinestudio
Local filmmaker Patrice Hamilton's new film is a "portrait of an American neighborhood where people struggle with the idea that life is movement." Cinestudio does a special, one-night only screening of the flick at 7:30 p.m.

October 5-13
Strange Culture @ Real Art Ways
I just finished watching the trailer of this movie and I have to say it looks worth a try. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 93 percent fresh rating, although it only has 14 total reviews. Either way, it looks like it is worth the six bucks, if only because there is really nothing else interesting out in mainstream theaters.

October 7
Gogol Bordello @ Toad’s Place
Ed has been talking about this band all week. He gave them a big ol' recommended "R" in the last couple issues of The Recorder, so they must be good right?

Quick update on Righteous Kill

A couple bits of news I've heard throughout the day.

It has been confirmed that 50 Cent, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro were all on set today.

The filming is currently still going on. If more develops I'll let you know.

The casting company does have some details, but mainly discusses where the extras should be and what they should be wearing:

Radiohead Decides Album Is Worthless

Radiohead is one of the few bands that is holding strong against the temptation of putting their work in the iTunes Online Music Store and it is now evident why.

Jonny Greenwood, the band's keyboard/piano player, posted on their website that their newest album, In Rainbows can be downloaded for any price you the listener deems fit. This brings a whole new way of purchasing music online and I for one think it's great.

I have decided that I will give Radiohead five dollars of my hard-earned cash in exchange for their newest album. If it lives up to the high expectations I hold for Radiohead, then I might even buy the band's DiscBox Set which is 81 dollars American. I have a feeling that I won't be alone in doing this.

Attention All Artists! Take note of what Radiohead is doing here and try to figure out why we should pay $19 for your album at Best Buy.

Sunday Afternoon Movie Matinee: Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres

I’m catching up on some summer movie hits that I missed out on. Namely, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres, which has been out on DVD since August. My colleague Edward gave a beaming review of the film back in April, but as I sat through it last night I started siding with the older crowd. USA Today said, “As a whole, though, it's definitely for devotees only, and is unlikely to earn any new converts.”

The problem is I am a devotee. I love Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but apparently only in 15-minute doses (the usual runtime per episode). The 79 minutes just bored me, and too many times the writers attempted to push along the non-existent plot instead of giving the audience unrelated, throwaway jokes. That is what Aqua Teen is all about. Not making sense and rarely tying together the last scene with the next, especially not over a 79-minute period.

I wanted my cheap laughs and I didn’t get many. I’d be much better off saving my time and my $3.99 for OnDemand and just watching an episode.

Didn't Feel Dirty, Didn't Feel Sexy, But Almost on the Money

Dirty Sexy Money, ABC's newest dramedy, premiered last night. After being hounded on the train to and from New York City all summer, I decided to make a conscious effort to tune in. Which is more than I can say about NBC's Bor-onic Woman. I tried my best to stay interested in Bionic Woman, if only to tell of it later, but it wasn't even worth the petty conversational piece.

Dirty Sexy Money, however, impressed. Don't get me wrong. It isn't great. I won't be making an effort to watch every Wednesday at 9 p.m., but I certainly won't turn away if I come across it. But for a show that is watched entirely on the shallowness of the majority of the characters, it does draw you in. Similar to how other shows featuring equally shallow, but instead non-fictional characters (i.e. Entertainment Tonight and the like) attempt to suck in people. Unlike Entertainment Tonight though, Dirty Sexy Money left me without feeling guilty as I enjoyed the vapidness of the Darling family as it tortured Nick George, their dead lawyer's son played by Peter Krause of Six Feet Under fame.

In short, the idea of this rich, clueless-to-the-outside-world family making Nick George jump through hoops as he tries to keep his down-to-earth life intact is certainly of interest. However, I couldn't help but wonder during the premiere if I was just watching a basic cable, family-version of Entourage.
