Department of Lay Ministry's Graham/Webb Scholarship Information for 2012-2013

The Department of Lay Ministry of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church believes that educating our young is a positive step in helping to provide role models for future generations. Thus, the Graham-Webb Scholarship named in honor of Dr. Willie L. Graham and Dr. Roscoe Webb, will provide assistance to deserving CME male students who plan to further their education after graduating from high school. The Department of Lay Ministry will, therefore, award nine (9) Graham-Webb Scholarships (one from each Episcopal District within the United States) in an amount no less than $500 and not exceeding $1000. An additional 5% of the award amount will be provided to young men who choose to attend a CME College. We believe that this scholarship is one small way of helping to make dreams come true.

Thanks to everyone across the CME Connection who has expressed concern and lifted prayers for the people of Alabama. The effects of the tornado damage done on April 27 to several communities in the Southeast, particularly in the state of Alabama, are massive. The death count is now around 300 and there are still a number of persons missing. Search and recovery efforts are still underway. A number of CME families have been impacted directly or indirectly by these tragic deaths. Schools remain closed and power is gradually being restored. We solicit your continued prayers.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported and/or attended this wonderful event that paid tribute to the effective collaborative partnerships with the Balm in Gilead by the Missionary presidents of the three African American Methodist denominations: Dr. Jamesina Evans (African Methodist Episcopal Church); Dr. Barbara Shaw (African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church) and yours truly (Christian Methodist Episcopal Church). Bishop Ronald M. Cunningham, the 53rd Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, was elected president of Churches Uniting In Christ (CUIC) at their meeting held January 18-20, 2011 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Although he was retired at the 2010 General Conference, he continues to serve the church in the capacity of the Ecumenical Bishop.

The Balm In Gilead will host Gala Celebration 2011, honoring the leadership and legacy of the international missionary presidents of the three historical African American Methodist denominations: Dr. Elnora P. Hamb (CME Church), Dr. Barbara Shaw (AMEZ Church) and Dr. Jamesina Evans (AME Church). The event will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011, 7:00 p.m., at The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, 1700 Tysons Boulevard in McLean, VA. The Gala Celebration will feature legendary gospel artist Richard Smallwood and Vision.
