Over 1600 competitors from around the globe attended the 9th Open Taekwondo International World Championships and I was there to see it from start to finish! I have no doubt that I have seen the best of the Taekwondo world in action, on the second day I was lucky enough to umpire from first round to final on the mens Black Belt welterweight division - over sixty competitors, incredibly fast and agile, spectacular and exciting. I was particularly impressed by the Australian, Polish and Argentinian fighters, and an American fighter whose front leg side kick was so sharp it was 'blink and miss it' quality! I am very pleased to be able to say that Richard won a bronze medal in his sparring - quite an achievement given the level and range of competitors present. The heads of a number of TKD organisations were present as was 9th degree Grandmaster C.K. Choi. In less than two weeks i'll be at the TKDI (Tae Kwon Do International - TAGB & many other national associations from around the world) World Championships and a couple of days ago I received the ID documents for Richard who will be amongst the competitors. To give you an idea of the scale of OUR World Championships, Richard is competitior #1420, and yes they did start at #1 and no he isn't anywhere near the end of the list!
