  NEDCC ANNOUNCES PRESERVATION 101 - THE FREE ONLINE PRESERVATION COURSE

THE NORTHEAST DOCUMENT CONSERVATION CENTER (NEDCC) is proud to offer
PRESERVATION 101, a free, comprehensive, self-paced online course on thepreservation of paper collections and related formats.

THE COURSE IS ACCESSIBLE FREE OF CHARGE  at www.preservation101.org,
and isintended to benefit professionals who are responsible
for the preservation of library and archival materials.
Participants will learn how to put preservation basics to work in the of small and moderately sized collections,
how to identify deteriorated materials, how to care for
collections, and how to set priorities for preservation.

GOALS FOR PRESERVATION 101:
To educate those working with paper-based and related media
collections about the basics of preservation
To help users raise their level of knowledge about preservation and
better understand their collections' preservation needs
To enable and motivate users to take action, including implementing
practices and planning, on both a short-term and long-term basis
To help users make the case for preservation in their institution
To provide access to more specialized information

DEVELOPMENT OF PRESERVATION 101 WAS FUNDED BY an Institute of Museum and
Library Services National Leadership grant. A live version of the
course inworkshop format was taught in the Pacific
Northwest, hosted by theUniversity of Washington in Seattle.
Faculty came from the University of
Washington, NEDCC, SOLINET, Amigos Library Services, CCAHA, and the OCLC
Western Service Center.  NEDCC and its Web production / e-learningconsultant, WGBH Educational Foundation in Boston,
produced this online version of the course.

Digital Humanities Observatory

Funded under PRTLI 4, the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and its partners in
the
Humanities Serving Irish Society Consortium (HSIS) will build a joint
national platform for the coordination and dissemination of humanities
research, teaching and training at an all-island level. The key
infrastructural element of the consortium will be the Digital Humanities
Observatory (DHO). The DHO will be an electronic access portal and
research
resource for the humanities, designed, hosted and operated by the RIA.

The RIA now invites applications for the following fixed term contract
position with the DHO:

Metadata Manager (Fixed term contract – 2 years 8 months)
Reporting to the DHO Director, the Metadata Manager will be responsible
for:
• promoting and supporting the use of advanced computing techniques as
applied to the humanities
• researching, evaluating, and interpreting developments in metadata
standards
• designing appropriate metadata schema to facilitate the use of HSIS
collections
• cataloguing materials using a variety of metadata schema
• assisting in the development of a technical framework to support a
shared
repository for HSIS research
• assisting in development efforts such as drafting funding
applications as
well as promoting the work of the DHO via professional activities such
as
conference presentations, articles and poster sessions.

The Metadata Manager will have an approved postgraduate library
qualification and at least two years working in a digital library or
digital
humanities environment with significant experience implementing
metadata for
digital environments. The successful candidate must demonstrate
proficiency
in OAI and XML DTDs or Schema (EAD and TEI), with two or more of the
following: DC, MARC, MODS or METS, as well as have experience
cataloguing
more traditional formats. Must have excellent communication skills, the
ability to interact with diverse groups of scholars and technical
staff, and
be able to effectively articulate abstract ideas. The candidate must be
self
directed, flexible and adaptable to change, analytical and results
oriented.

It is desirable that the Metadata Manager has experience in
understanding
the principles of database structure and design as well as training and
mentoring.

Salary Scale: €48,780 - €52,800

The Government Documents Special Interest Section of the American
Association of Law Libraries (GD-SIS) is pleased to announce the
availability of the 2008 Veronica Maclay Student Grant. For 2008, the
grant winner may apply the grant toward the student registration costs
for the AALL Annual Meeting & Conference (July 12-15) and CONELL
(Conference of Newer Law Librarians) (July 12), both in Portland,
Oregon, and for associated travel and lodging costs, up to a maximum of
$1,000.00.

Rumors of the “death of reference” have been greatly exaggerated! Reference and information service now encompasses not just traditional forms such as in-person point-of-service, telephone, and e-mail, but also Instant Messaging, Text Messaging (SMS), blogs, wikis, library pages on MySpace and Facebook, and virtual reference desks in Second Life.
A Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends conference will explore all aspects of reference service in a broad range of contexts, including libraries and information centers, in academic, public, school, corporate, and other special library environments. This two-day conference will incorporate the multitude of established, emerging, and merging types of reference service including both traditional and virtual reference. It presents an opportunity for all reference practitioners and scholars to explore the rapid growth and changing nature of reference, as an escalating array of information technologies blend with traditional reference service to create vibrant hybrids.
Our theme of a “Reference Renaissance” was taken from an editorial by Diane Zabel, in a recent issue of Reference and User Services Quarterly (winter 2007). Zabel wrote of a “resurgence of interest in reference” and that “reference is experiencing a regeneration, a reference renaissance.”
Submissions of papers, panels, and workshop proposals are welcomed that analyze issues, identify best practices, advance organizational and technological systems, propose standards, and/or suggest innovative approaches that will reveal as well as invent the future of reference in this exciting and unfolding landscape. The conference will be organized around the following interest tracks. Please note that the sub-bullets are intended to be suggested topics, not to be a comprehensive listing.

TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS:

1.       Papers (500 word abstracts): include reports and research studies on any aspect of reference, user studies, evaluation projects, innovative practical applications, theme papers, or theoretical developments. In addition, works in progress and student papers are invited. Submissions should include: 1) a cover sheet with the paper title, author(s), contact information and affiliations(s) for each author, conference track(s) and 2) a second page consisting of a 500 word abstract that summarizes the paper but does NOT show your name or any contact information. Papers will be refereed by the program committee.
2.       Panels: include proposals for 1.5 hour long sessions on topics such as reference innovations, implementation of new technology, evaluation projects, reports by practitioners on current initiatives, theme panels, and contrasting viewpoints on controversial or hot issues. Innovative formats are sought, especially those that encourage audience participation, such as: roundtable discussions, debates, forums, or case studies. Submissions should include: panel title, names, affiliations, and contact information for all participants (moderators, panelists, respondents, etc.), conference track(s), and a brief overview (250 words) of the issues, projects or viewpoints to be discussed. Panels will be refereed by the program committee.
3.       Workshops, Demonstrations, and Reports from the Field: include proposals for 30 minute sessions on working projects, new services, new approaches to reference instruction, or to developments-in-progress. These can be educational in nature. Submissions should include workshop of demonstration title, names and affiliations of all participants, contact information, conference track(s), and brief overview (250 words) of the session.

NEW SAN JOSE GATEWAY PHD PROGRAM IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

San Jose, Calif. April 7, 2008 The School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University is pleased to announce its new San Jose Gateway PhD Program. The doctoral degree will be offered through a partnership with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) – a top Australian university with global connections and leading scholars in the information science community. Responding to demand from graduates for a high quality, flexibly delivered doctoral degree program, the part-time doctoral program will be delivered through distance learning with short residencies in San Jose. Students will focus on well-defined research areas in Library and Information Science (LIS) such as archives and records administration, information retrieval, information systems and technologies, information use, LIS education, management and leadership, and youth services.

Director Ken Haycock said, “As we explored our options for developing the San Jose Gateway PhD Program, the School sought a premier partner and was pleased to join with QUT in this endeavor. Responsibilities: Delivers reference services in a robust Information

DESCRIPTION: The Processing Archivist will assist the Archivist in fulfilling the mission of a local non-profit organization by performing varied tasks related to the daily operations of the Office of Archives and Records. The Processing Archivist will be particularly interested in the areas of processing archival materials, and providing research services. Under the supervision of the Director of Archives and Records, the Processing Archivist is responsible for arranging, describing, and cataloging archival collections, including documents, photographs and artifacts. The Processing Archivist will conduct research that answers the needs of the staff and community, order supplies, prepare finding aids, and assist in conducting a records inventory. The Processing Archivist will arrange, describe and file collections of materials in appropriate cabinets, drawers, and boxes. The Processing Archivist will catalog the collections at the box and folder level using an Access database. The Processing Archivist will be responsible for assisting in the preparation of special bibliographies, indexes, finding aides, and development of retention schedules. The Processing Archivist must be able to re-house materials in acid-free enclosures. The Processing Archivist will be asked to provide reference services and assistance to researchers by phone, e-mail, and in person. The Processing Archivist should be capable of assisting in conducting a records inventory throughout the organization. The Processing Archivist must understand what is required to abide by the Society of American Archivists Code of Ethics and the Archives and Records Policies and Procedures, and be able to follow these policies.

REQUIREMENTS: At minimum, the Processing Archivist must have a Masters of Arts or Masters of Library Science with a concentration in archival administration. The Processing Archivist should also have a minimum of two to three years experience processing archival materials and records. The most qualified Processing Archivist candidate must have good oral and written communication skills, and a strong commitment to accurately compile, file, and organize historical information and records. The top Processing Archivist candidate will have at least basic computer proficiency with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications. The Processing Archivist must also have a good understanding of database management and authority control, and in addition, possess knowledge of scanning software and hardware, and comfortable use of PhotoShop. The Processing Archivist needs to be able to reach objects in high places, and lift a box of up to 50 pounds. Organizational skills and ability to perform tasks requiring close attention to detail are essential for the Processing Archivist. The organization prefers that the Processing Archivist have knowledge of emerging trends in archival processing and Microsoft Access with an emphasis on issues related to the management and preservation of electronic records.

Sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA's refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL), and a certificate. The deadline for submission of the manuscript has been extended to April 10, 2007.
The purpose of the award is to recognize superior student writing and to enhance the professional development of students. The manuscript can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology. Examples include digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and electronic publishing, telecommunications, distributed systems and networks, computer security, intellectual property rights, technical standards, desktop applications, online catalogs and bibliographic systems, universal access to technology, library consortia and others.

Rumors of the “death of reference” have been greatly exaggerated! Reference and information services now encompass not just traditional forms such as in-person point-of-service, telephone, and e-mail, but also Instant Messaging, Text Messaging (SMS), blogs, wikis, library pages on MySpace and Facebook, and virtual reference desks in Second Life.

A Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends conference will explore all aspects of reference service in a broad range of contexts, including libraries and information centers, in academic, public, school, corporate, and other special library environments. This two-day conference will incorporate the multitude of established, emerging, and merging types of reference service including both traditional and virtual reference. It presents an opportunity for all reference practitioners and scholars to explore the rapid growth and changing nature of reference, as an escalating array of information technologies blend with traditional reference service to create vibrant hybrids.

Our theme of a “Reference Renaissance” was taken from an editorial by Diane Zabel, in a recent issue of Reference and User Services Quarterly (winter 2007). Zabel wrote of a “resurgence of interest in reference” and that “reference is experiencing a regeneration, a reference renaissance.”

Submissions of papers, panels, and workshop proposals are welcomed that analyze issues, identify best practices, advance organizational and technological systems, propose standards, and/or suggest innovative approaches that will reveal as well as invent the future of reference in this exciting and unfolding landscape. TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS:
1.       Papers (500 word abstracts): include reports and research studies on any aspect of reference, user studies, evaluation projects, innovative practical applications, theme papers, or theoretical developments. In addition, works in progress and student papers are invited. Submissions should include: 1) a cover sheet with the paper title, author(s), contact information and affiliations(s) for each author, conference track(s) and 2) a second page consisting of a 500 word abstract that summarizes the paper but does NOT show your name or any contact information. Papers will be refereed by the program committee.
2.       Panels: include proposals for 1.5 hour long sessions on topics such as reference innovations, implementation of new technology, evaluation projects, reports by practitioners on current initiatives, theme panels, and contrasting viewpoints on controversial or hot issues. Innovative formats are sought, especially those that encourage audience participation, such as: roundtable discussions, debates, forums, or case studies. Submissions should include: panel title, names, affiliations, and contact information for all participants (moderators, panelists, respondents, etc.), conference track(s), and a brief overview (250 words) of the issues, projects or viewpoints to be discussed. Panels will be refereed by the program committee.
3.       Workshops, Demonstrations, and Reports from the Field: include proposals for 30 minute sessions on working projects, new services, new approaches to reference instruction, or to developments-in-progress. These can be educational in nature. Submissions should include workshop of demonstration title, names and affiliations of all participants, contact information, conference track(s), and brief overview (250 words) of the session.

Students, Librarians and colleagues are cordially invited to Emory University for "'A Fine Excess': A Three-Day Celebration of Poetry at Emory University" April 2-4. More than ten of the top living U.S. poets will be reading or will be interviewed during the celebration, which is free and open to the public.

Dana Gioia, poet and chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, will open. Poets participating in the celebration include: Morri Creech, Erica Dawson, Jeff Harrison, Joseph Harrison, J.D. McClatchy, Eric McHenry, Mary Jo Salter, W. D. Snodgrass, Mark Strand, Deborah Warren, Clive Watkins, Richard Wilbur and Greg Williamson.

Democratic Vistas: Exploring the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library is curated by Kevin Young, Atticus Haygood Professor of English and Creative Writing, and draws on the 75,000-volume Danowski collection of English language poetry, donated to Emory in 2003. This exhibition, accompanied by a published catalog, includes rare editions of some of the 20th century’s most important works of poetry, ranging literally from A-Z, from W.H. Auden to Louis Zukofsky.

A companion exhibition, curated by Jennifer Brady, Visions and Revisions: An Exhibition of Poems in Process, traces the creative process through 16 sets of manuscript drafts including the worksheets of Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath and Natasha Trethewey.

The Annual Miriam Braverman prize Contest

We're pleased to announce the fifth annual Miriam Braverman prize, sponsored by the Progressive Librarians Guild, for the best student paper on progressive library issues. Braverman Prize Guidelines for PLG

1. Entrants must be Library/Information Science students attending a graduate level program in the United States or Canada.

2. Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the entrant, in English, and must not exceed 3,000 words.

3. The topic of the paper should concern an aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, or archival work are also acceptable. Topics could include, but are not limited to, such concerns as professional ethics in the age of the USA PATRIOT Act; the commodification of information; the political value choices of cataloging and indexing; the role of libraries in bridging the information gap; democratic management systems within libraries, etc.

4. Each entry should include a cover sheet containing the entrant's name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the entrant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.

5. Entries must be submitted electronically, in MS Word or RTF format, to bravermansubmissions@gmail.com

6. Entries must be received no later than 6pm on, April 15, 2008.

7. The winning entry will be published in Progressive Librarian and must conform to MLA in-text citation style. The winning entrant will also receive a $300 stipend toward attendance at the 2008 American Library Association annual conference in Anaheim, CA and an award at the annual PLG dinner. Award money is available only for ALA conference attendance; if the winner is unable to attend, the money will remain in the Braverman Award fund account or be donated at the discretion of the committee.

8. The judges' decision is final. The act of submission implies the unqualified acceptance of the conditions of entry by the entrant.
