Nature of Work

A full-time 12 month non-tenure track faculty appointment. Responsibilities include providing reference service, providing bibliographic instruction, assisting in collection development and electronic ordering of books, maintenance of book request databases, control of serials including maintenance of Local Data Records on OCLC, and providing interlibrary loan and circulation service including Universal Borrowing with the GALILEO Interconnected Libraries (GIL) system using the Ex Libris Voyager software.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, Skills
Master's in Library Science, knowledge of integrated library automation systems, familiarity with electronic information resources, excellent customer service orientation, and a commitment to the mission of the two-year college.

Desirable Knowledge Abilities, Skills
Experience with and detailed knowledge of current microcomputer, networking and client/server technologies (software and hardware) and demonstrated willingness to learn.

ALISE Youth SIG Travel Award

The ALISE Youth SIG seeks graduate student applications for the ALISE /
University of Washington Information School Youth Services Graduate
Student Travel Award which supports costs associated with travel to and
participation in the 2010 ALISE Annual Conference in Boston, MA.

This award is open to students currently enrolled (at the time of the
ALISE conference) in an LIS graduate program (including both doctoral
and master’s studies) with a concentration in youth services, broadly
defined to include materials and library/information services for
children and young adults in both everyday life and school settings.
Applicants must be members of the Youth Services SIG and must be
actively participating in the 2010 ALISE conference (e.g., presenting a
poster or a paper, serving as a member of a panel, interviewing for a
faculty position). An individual may only receive the Award once.

Interested graduate students should submit an application which
includes: (1) a letter (no more than one page, single-spaced)

Video Archiving Intern

Video Archiving Systems Intern
The intern will focus on auditing the media collection of the press and public information office, create a log of media types and content using Filemaker Pro, research media library standards, and develop a system and appropriate formats for accessioning and deaccessioning media. This important work will dovetail with that of the video production and distribution intern (see description below) in the same office. The systems set up by this intern will enable the Gallery to produce media summaries about its promotional campaigns and to produce frequent and timely video and audio releases in multiple formats for multiple platforms, including television, Facebook, YouTube, and the Gallery's own Web site. Current library and information science graduate students and 2009 graduates of such programs are invited to apply. Term of internship: 6?12 months. Are you an LIS student interested in activism and the struggle for social justice? Do you stay awake at night thinking about how your politics might inform your professional practice?

The MIRIAM BRAVERMAN MEMORIAL PRIZE, a presentation of the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), is awarded each year for the best paper about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, and archival work are also eligible.

The winning paper will be published in the Summer 2009 issue of Progressive Librarian. The winner of the contest will also receive a $300 stipend to help offset the cost of travel to and from the 2009 American Library Association annual conference in Chicago, IL. The award will be presented at the annual PLG dinner.

Think you might be interested? Here's the fine print.

1. Contestants must be library and/or information science students attending a graduate-level program in the United States or Canada.

2. Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant, and must be written in English. Entries may not exceed 3,000 words, and must conform to MLA in-text citation style.

3. To facilitate the blind review process, each entry must include a cover sheet providing the contestant's name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the contestant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.

4. Entries must be submitted electronically, in Microsoft Word or RTF format, to bravermansubmissions@gmail.com. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on May 1, 2009.

5. The $300 stipend is available only to help defray the cost of ALA conference attendance; if the winner of the contest is unable to attend, the money will remain in the Braverman Prize endowment fund and may be donated to a progressive cause at the discretion of the selection committee.

British Studies Program- Southern Mississippi

The University of Southern Mississippi will again offer students an opportunity to study Library Science in London through a four-week course offered through the British Studies Program. To get more information, please visit us at www.britishstudies.org.

The course carries six hours of undergraduate or graduate credit and will be offered from July 9-Aug. 9, 2009, in London. USM offers the course through a consortium of 12 southeastern schools. Each year about 150-200 students from across the U.S. take part in British Studies. Credit from the University of Southern Mississippi is transferable; check with your home institution regarding its policies for credit transfer.

Students participating in the Library Science course will have the opportunity to learn about famous authors and collections. Distinguished British scholars and lecturers will provide instruction as well as guided tours of a variety of British libraries, museums, and archives. Students will accompany instructors to sites such as Oxford and Stratford, and explore sites of interest on their own. A historic recreation of the Globe Theater is within walking distance on the south bank of the Thames and you may purchase tickets to a Shakespeare production.

The British Studies Program stays in central London at King's College in one of their dormitories. The rooms are small, but everyone gets a private room with fridge and private bath. Everyone has access to a shared kitchen (while few students do a lot of cooking, the kitchen is handy). The dorm has a large courtyard that is the social center of the program. Participants quickly make friends with the students in their class as well as students from across the country.

The dorm is on Stamford Street, a hundred yards or so from Waterloo Station. The central location puts you just a few minutes' walk from Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, and the theater district. Most people walk when they're headed to central London, it's so close.

The cost for the program is $5,499 for undergraduates and $5,699 for graduates. This price includes tuition, air travel, and lodging. Qualified students can normally get financial aid just as if this were a course you were taking in the U.S. You apply through your local financial aid office. There are no prerequisites for this course. The International Programs office at USM is more than happy to provide you with any information regarding financial aid and credit transfer.

Assists library patrons in research, using print, online and audiovisual resources in music, dance and theatre. Advises and participates in managing the Hartt Performance Library and the Music Education Resource Library.

The Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition
The Legal History and Rare Books Section of the American Association of Law Libraries, in cooperation with Gale Cengage Learning, announces the first annual Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition.
The essay competition is named in honor of Morris L. Cohen, Professor Emeritus of Law at Yale Law School. Professor Cohen’s scholarly work is in the fields of legal research, rare books, and historical bibliography.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage scholarship in the areas of legal history, rare law books, and legal archives, and to expose students to the American Association of Law Libraries and law librarianship.
Eligibility Requirements
Currently enrolled students attending accredited graduate programs in library science, law, history, or related subjects are eligible to enter the competition. Students may be enrolled either full- or part-time. Membership in the American Association of Law Libraries is not required.
Papers may be on any topic related to legal history, rare law books, or legal archives. No paper, or portion of a paper, that has been published or accepted for publication before April 15, 2009 will be eligible for consideration. Papers and all supporting documentation must be submitted by April 15, 2009. The winner will be announced by May 15.
Prize
The winner will receive a $500.00 prize from Gale Cengage Learning. In addition, the winner will receive up to $1000 to be applied towards expenses associated with attendance at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries. The 2009 Annual Meeting will be held July 25-28 in Washington, D.C. Attendance at the Annual Meeting is encouraged, but not required.

Doctoral Fellowships in Archival Studies are currently available through a new eight-campus initiative for individuals who are interested in pursuing careers as educators and scholars and who would be entering doctoral programs in Fall 2009. Applicants must apply for both the Fellowship and admission to one or more of the eight participating doctoral programs: University of California, Los Angeles; University of Michigan; University of Maryland; University of Texas, Austin; Simmons College; University of Wisconsin, Madison; University of Pittsburgh; and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Each Fellowship will provide full tuition and annual stipends of $20,000 to Fellows for the first two years of their doctoral study at partnering academic programs. The first class of fellows worked for ten weeks this past summer at ALA Washington and at other public interest organizations involved in debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright reform, online privacy, and open government. In particular, ALA encourages master's and doctoral students in library and information studies with an interest in national public policy to apply for this fellowship. We expect 2009 to be an especially exciting time to be in Washington...

Those selected as fellows for the 2009 summer will receive a stipend to spend ten weeks contributing to the public debate on technology policy issues -- and ALA's fellow will focus on these issues from the perspective of the library community. The participating organizations from 2008 include: American Library Association, Cato Institute, Center for Democracy and Technology, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Internet Education Foundation, Media Access Project, New America Foundation, and Public Knowledge. Florida State University, College of information, is offering two graduate LIS courses at its London Centre and in Paris this summer. Please forward this email to any of your students or colleagues who you think would be interested in this opportunity to study abroad for three weeks in Europe.
Study in London and Paris this summer!
An exciting opportunity to earn six graduate LIS credits while living in central London and Paris is being offered by the Florida State University College of Information. Two multimedia production courses, taught from June 25, July 16, 2009 at the FSU London Centre and in Paris will use these dynamic cities and the surrounding areas as a backdrop for creating projects such as podcasts, websites, short films, and digital photography. No prior experience with these media is required. All 4-day per week classes will be field trip based.
Other pertinent information:

The two courses being offered are: LIS 5313: Design and Production of Media Resources and LIS 5362: Design and Production of Network Multimedia. Participants must take both courses and they will be focused on application of media to libraries and teaching and learning. Students will have the opportunity to apply course material to their current work situation if desired.

The FSU London Centre is housed in a 17th century building that FSU owns in the heart of 'literary London' and very close to the shopping district and to the theater district. It is less that one block from the British Museum. Students live there or in nearby apartments. Housing in Paris will be in a centrally located hotel.

London provides superb cultural exposure. The variety of arts, theatre, performances, and other cultural venues available in London is stunning, and almost all of them provide student rates. Often the school has inexpensive play tickets available. London has some of the best museums, historical attractions, and buildings in the world.
Paris is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. In Paris we ll visit the Louvre, Champs Elysees, the Pierre Lachaise cemetery as well as dine in outdoor cafes along the Seine River.
Many field trips are tied to settings of children’s stories like Harry Potter, Peter Pan, and Mary Poppins.
Extra time is budgeted for travel on your own.

Cost is $5575 for both in-state and out-of-state participants. The fee includes all registration and instructional costs for up to 6 undergraduate or graduate credit hours; travel on the Eurostar from London to Paris; program social/cultural activities; health insurance; international student ID card; T-shirt; full-time academic and administrative support.

The course is open to students from other universities who may wish to transfer the credits, or to non-students (media specialists, teachers, and librarians) who are interested in this exciting summer opportunity. Credits earned in this program may be later transferred into the master’s degree program at FSU for students who may be accepted at a future date. These offerings are regularly offered graduate courses.

The Director is responsible for overseeing the allocation and maintenance of over 700 desktop computers for library staff and the public, and the distribution and proper function of networked printers and other computer peripherals. The Director will manage library desktop support services including supervision of two full-time computer support personnel, and will plan and manage computer leases and equipment deployment and installation. The Director will manage the technical support budget, handle equipment and software requests from library staff and faculty, evaluate requests and alternatives and seek solutions based on needs assessments. The Director must be aware of workflow and processes in an academic library; the position will require them to orient new library faculty and staff on University and Library computing policy, basic computer operations, general library systems, and standard University computing services like IDs, passwords, and email. The Director may need to conduct training or demonstrations for some software applications. The successful candidate will be expected to possess a keen understanding of computer operations, and will be expected to monitor trends in information technology and new uses of computing and software in academic libraries. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Library Information Technology, the Director of Library Desktop Support must communicate and maintain close interaction with most departments in the UK library system. Additionally, the Director will participate in library committee/workgroups and other library service activities. The selected students will be expected to attend the full LITA National Forum, Friday noon through Sunday noon, but not the pre-conferences on Thursday and Friday. You will be assigned a variety of duties, but will be able to attend the Forum programs, which include 3 keynote sessions, approximately 30 concurrent sessions, and 12 poster presentations.
The student rate is $175 – half the regular registration rate for LITA members. This rate includes a Friday night reception at the hotel, continental breakfasts, and Saturday lunch.

Washington DC--Applications are now available for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Career Enhancement Program (formerly announced as the ARL Minority Fellowship Program). Master's of library science students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours by December 31, 2008, in an ALA-accredited MLS program are encouraged to apply for this enriching program experience.

The ARL Career Enhancement Program has four main components:

Six- to Twelve-Week Fellowship Experience: Each fellow will have the opportunity to work in a research library to gain both educational and professional experience while earning an MLS. Fellows will be assembled in groups of two or three to create a fellowship cohort at each host institution.

Mentoring Relationship: A professional librarian will mentor each fellow during the fellowship. The mentoring relationship will be different from the supervisory relationship and will provide the fellows with professional guidance and resource sharing.

Leadership Development: The fellows will participate in the ARL Leadership Institute, hosted in January in conjunction with the ALA Midwinter Meeting. During the institute, the fellows will have an opportunity to explore macro-level issues facing research libraries and discuss transitioning into a research library upon graduation. The fellows will have an opportunity to connect with other ARL fellows, library leaders, and other MLS students who attend the annual Leadership Institute.

Career Placement: ARL staff will work with each fellow to network and connect with ARL member libraries to facilitate the job search process.

Qualifications for Participating

Eligible applicants for the fellowship must:

be accepted in an ALA-accredited graduate library school program;be a member of a racial/ethnic minority group as described by the US Census Bureau; and have completed a minimum of 12 graduate-level credits in library and information science by December 31, 2008.

Selection and Institutional Match

The ARL Career Enhancement Program uses a unique process for selecting and matching fellows with host institutions. Each host institution has committed to have one designated staff member serve on the Coordinating Committee. The committee will read the entire application pool; select acceptable fellows; and then enter into dialogue about experience, professional fit (fellows' goals and desired experience), and creating a diverse group of students. The committee will then work together to create the best placement for each fellow.

Funded under PRTLI 4, the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and its partners in
the
Humanities Serving Irish Society Consortium (HSIS) will build a joint
national platform for the coordination and dissemination of humanities
research, teaching and training at an all-island level. The key
infrastructural element of the consortium will be the Digital Humanities
Observatory (DHO). The DHO will be an electronic access portal and
research
resource for the humanities, designed, hosted and operated by the RIA.

The RIA now invites applications for the following fixed term contract
position with the DHO:

Metadata Manager (Fixed term contract – 2 years 8 months)
Reporting to the DHO Director, the Metadata Manager will be responsible
for:
• promoting and supporting the use of advanced computing techniques as
applied to the humanities
• researching, evaluating, and interpreting developments in metadata
standards
• designing appropriate metadata schema to facilitate the use of HSIS
collections
• cataloguing materials using a variety of metadata schema
• assisting in the development of a technical framework to support a

Rumors of the “death of reference” have been greatly exaggerated! Reference and information service now encompasses not just traditional forms such as in-person point-of-service, telephone, and e-mail, but also Instant Messaging, Text Messaging (SMS), blogs, wikis, library pages on MySpace and Facebook, and virtual reference desks in Second Life.
A Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends conference will explore all aspects of reference service in a broad range of contexts, including libraries and information centers, in academic, public, school, corporate, and other special library environments. This two-day conference will incorporate the multitude of established, emerging, and merging types of reference service including both traditional and virtual reference. It presents an opportunity for all reference practitioners and scholars to explore the rapid growth and changing nature of reference, as an escalating array of information technologies blend with traditional reference service to create vibrant hybrids.
Our theme of a “Reference Renaissance” was taken from an editorial by Diane Zabel, in a recent issue of Reference and User Services Quarterly (winter 2007). Zabel wrote of a “resurgence of interest in reference” and that “reference is experiencing a regeneration, a reference renaissance.”
Submissions of papers, panels, and workshop proposals are welcomed that analyze issues, identify best practices, advance organizational and technological systems, propose standards, and/or suggest innovative approaches that will reveal as well as invent the future of reference in this exciting and unfolding landscape. The conference will be organized around the following interest tracks. Please note that the sub-bullets are intended to be suggested topics, not to be a comprehensive listing.

TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS:

1.       Papers (500 word abstracts): include reports and research studies on any aspect of reference, user studies, evaluation projects, innovative practical applications, theme papers, or theoretical developments. In addition, works in progress and student papers are invited. Submissions should include: 1) a cover sheet with the paper title, author(s), contact information and affiliations(s) for each author, conference track(s) and 2) a second page consisting of a 500 word abstract that summarizes the paper but does NOT show your name or any contact information. Papers will be refereed by the program committee.
2.       Panels: include proposals for 1.5 hour long sessions on topics such as reference innovations, implementation of new technology, evaluation projects, reports by practitioners on current initiatives, theme panels, and contrasting viewpoints on controversial or hot issues. Innovative formats are sought, especially those that encourage audience participation, such as: roundtable discussions, debates, forums, or case studies. Submissions should include: panel title, names, affiliations, and contact information for all participants (moderators, panelists, respondents, etc.), conference track(s), and a brief overview (250 words) of the issues, projects or viewpoints to be discussed. Panels will be refereed by the program committee.
3.       Workshops, Demonstrations, and Reports from the Field: include proposals for 30 minute sessions on working projects, new services, new approaches to reference instruction, or to developments-in-progress. These can be educational in nature. Submissions should include workshop of demonstration title, names and affiliations of all participants, contact information, conference track(s), and brief overview (250 words) of the session.

NEW SAN JOSE GATEWAY PHD PROGRAM IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

San Jose, Calif. April 7, 2008 The School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University is pleased to announce its new San Jose Gateway PhD Program. The doctoral degree will be offered through a partnership with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) – a top Australian university with global connections and leading scholars in the information science community. Responding to demand from graduates for a high quality, flexibly delivered doctoral degree program, the part-time doctoral program will be delivered through distance learning with short residencies in San Jose. Students will focus on well-defined research areas in Library and Information Science (LIS) such as archives and records administration, information retrieval, information systems and technologies, information use, LIS education, management and leadership, and youth services.

Director Ken Haycock said, “As we explored our options for developing the San Jose Gateway PhD Program, the School sought a premier partner and was pleased to join with QUT in this endeavor. POSITION: Processing Archivist

DESCRIPTION: The Processing Archivist will assist the Archivist in fulfilling the mission of a local non-profit organization by performing varied tasks related to the daily operations of the Office of Archives and Records. The Processing Archivist will be particularly interested in the areas of processing archival materials, and providing research services. Under the supervision of the Director of Archives and Records, the Processing Archivist is responsible for arranging, describing, and cataloging archival collections, including documents, photographs and artifacts. The Processing Archivist will conduct research that answers the needs of the staff and community, order supplies, prepare finding aids, and assist in conducting a records inventory. The Processing Archivist will arrange, describe and file collections of materials in appropriate cabinets, drawers, and boxes. The Processing Archivist will catalog the collections at the box and folder level using an Access database. The Processing Archivist will be responsible for assisting in the preparation of special bibliographies, indexes, finding aides, and development of retention schedules. The Processing Archivist must be able to re-house materials in acid-free enclosures. The Processing Archivist will be asked to provide reference services and assistance to researchers by phone, e-mail, and in person. The Processing Archivist should be capable of assisting in conducting a records inventory throughout the organization. The Processing Archivist must understand what is required to abide by the Society of American Archivists Code of Ethics and the Archives and Records Policies and Procedures, and be able to follow these policies.

REQUIREMENTS: At minimum, the Processing Archivist must have a Masters of Arts or Masters of Library Science with a concentration in archival administration. The Processing Archivist should also have a minimum of two to three years experience processing archival materials and records. The most qualified Processing Archivist candidate must have good oral and written communication skills, and a strong commitment to accurately compile, file, and organize historical information and records. The top Processing Archivist candidate will have at least basic computer proficiency with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications. The Processing Archivist must also have a good understanding of database management and authority control, and in addition, possess knowledge of scanning software and hardware, and comfortable use of PhotoShop. The Processing Archivist needs to be able to reach objects in high places, and lift a box of up to 50 pounds. Organizational skills and ability to perform tasks requiring close attention to detail are essential for the Processing Archivist. The organization prefers that the Processing Archivist have knowledge of emerging trends in archival processing and Microsoft Access with an emphasis on issues related to the management and preservation of electronic records.

The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to offer an award for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program. Sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA's refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL), and a certificate. The deadline for submission of the manuscript has been extended to April 10, 2007.
The purpose of the award is to recognize superior student writing and to enhance the professional development of students. The manuscript can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology. Examples include digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and electronic publishing, telecommunications, distributed systems and networks, computer security, intellectual property rights, technical standards, desktop applications, online catalogs and bibliographic systems, universal access to technology, library consortia and others.
At the time the unpublished manuscript is submitted, the applicant(s) must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited program in library and information studies at the masters or Ph.D. level.

Rumors of the “death of reference” have been greatly exaggerated! Reference and information services now encompass not just traditional forms such as in-person point-of-service, telephone, and e-mail, but also Instant Messaging, Text Messaging (SMS), blogs, wikis, library pages on MySpace and Facebook, and virtual reference desks in Second Life.

A Reference Renaissance: Current and Future Trends conference will explore all aspects of reference service in a broad range of contexts, including libraries and information centers, in academic, public, school, corporate, and other special library environments. This two-day conference will incorporate the multitude of established, emerging, and merging types of reference service including both traditional and virtual reference. It presents an opportunity for all reference practitioners and scholars to explore the rapid growth and changing nature of reference, as an escalating array of information technologies blend with traditional reference service to create vibrant hybrids.

Our theme of a “Reference Renaissance” was taken from an editorial by Diane Zabel, in a recent issue of Reference and User Services Quarterly (winter 2007). Zabel wrote of a “resurgence of interest in reference” and that “reference is experiencing a regeneration, a reference renaissance.”

Submissions of papers, panels, and workshop proposals are welcomed that analyze issues, identify best practices, advance organizational and technological systems, propose standards, and/or suggest innovative approaches that will reveal as well as invent the future of reference in this exciting and unfolding landscape. TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS:
1. Submissions should include: 1) a cover sheet with the paper title, author(s), contact information and affiliations(s) for each author, conference track(s) and 2) a second page consisting of a 500 word abstract that summarizes the paper but does NOT show your name or any contact information. Papers will be refereed by the program committee.
2.       Panels: include proposals for 1.5 hour long sessions on topics such as reference innovations, implementation of new technology, evaluation projects, reports by practitioners on current initiatives, theme panels, and contrasting viewpoints on controversial or hot issues. Innovative formats are sought, especially those that encourage audience participation, such as: roundtable discussions, debates, forums, or case studies. Submissions should include: panel title, names, affiliations, and contact information for all participants (moderators, panelists, respondents, etc.), conference track(s), and a brief overview (250 words) of the issues, projects or viewpoints to be discussed. Panels will be refereed by the program committee.
3.       Workshops, Demonstrations, and Reports from the Field: include proposals for 30 minute sessions on working projects, new services, new approaches to reference instruction, or to developments-in-progress. These can be educational in nature. Submissions should include workshop of demonstration title, names and affiliations of all participants, contact information, conference track(s), and brief overview (250 words) of the session.

The Annual Miriam Braverman prize Contest

Braverman Prize Guidelines for PLG

1. Entrants must be Library/Information Science students attending a graduate level program in the United States or Canada.

2. Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the entrant, in English, and must not exceed 3,000 words.

3. The topic of the paper should concern an aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, or archival work are also acceptable. Topics could include, but are not limited to, such concerns as professional ethics in the age of the USA PATRIOT Act; the commodification of information; the political value choices of cataloging and indexing; the role of libraries in bridging the information gap; democratic management systems within libraries, etc.

4. Each entry should include a cover sheet containing the entrant's name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the entrant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.

5. Entries must be submitted electronically, in MS Word or RTF format, to bravermansubmissions@gmail.com

6. Entries must be received no later than 6pm on, April 15, 2008.

7. The winning entry will be published in Progressive Librarian and must conform to MLA in-text citation style. PLA is seeking interested parties to submit virtual poster sessions as
part of the first-ever PLA Virtual Conference. The PLA Virtual
Conference will be held March 27 and 28 during the live PLA National
Conference in Minneapolis.
The topic of the poster session can be of the applicant*s choosing,
but must be related to public librarianship. Virtual posters can be
submitted as Web pages, PowerPoint presentations, or other formats which

The South Orange County Community College District is located in Orange County in Southern California, between Los Angeles and San Diego. The District covers 48 percent of the geographic area of Orange County and is a multi-campus district of two beautiful campuses, Saddleback College in the City of Mission Viejo and Irvine Valley College in the City of Irvine. The Library at College of DuPage has created a two-year residency program in community college librarianship to attract the best and the brightest of recently graduated master of library studies professionals. The Digital Library of Georgia is pleased to announce the availability
of
one internship position available from late May through the end of
August
2008 to last no more than ten weeks (dates are negotiable). Located in
Athens, Ga., the Digital Library (http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/) works
together with Georgia's libraries, archives, museums, and other
institutions
of cultural heritage to provide access to the cultural and historical
resources of the state of Georgia. This primary mission is accomplished
through the ongoing development, maintenance, and preservation of
digital
collections and online digital library resources. These may include
materials such as original manuscripts, typescripts, books, photographs,
maps, sheet music, posters and broadsides, newspapers, primary source
materials on microfilm, audio, video, and other formats.

The internship position will be available from late May through the end
of
August 2008 to last no more than ten weeks (dates are negotiable). The
intern will work a thirty-five hour work week and assist in the
collection
and upgrading of partner metadata related to the history and culture of
the
state of Georgia. Activities also may include image preparation and

The Chemistry Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) is sponsoring a student/new member travel award to defray the costs of attending the 2008 SLA Annual Meeting June 15-18 in Seattle, WA. The award is intended to encourage the professional development of student members and new members of the Chemistry Division and encourage their participation in Chemistry Division activities.

TRAVEL AWARD: $1,500 stipend to attend the 2008 SLA Annual Conference. The winner will also receive a certificate of achievement and will be introduced at the Chemistry Division Business Meeting & Breakfast.

ELIGIBILITY: All student members of the Chemistry Division and all new members of the Chemistry Division (individuals who have joined since January 2007) are eligible. All applicants must have joined the Chemistry Division by March 3, 2008. See below for how to join.

HISTORY:   The award is named to honor Marion E. Sparks, a chemistry librarian at the University of Illinois from 1913 until her death in 1929. Ms. Sparks contributed a great deal to the field of chemical information, her achievements include teaching courses on chemical information, and authoring and publishing what is argued to be the first book to formally address chemical literature and library instruction.

Libraries and Librarianship: Past, Present and Future

SILS has partnered with the University of Oxford and its Department of

Study in the Czech Republic is offered from May 25 - June 7, 2008.

The College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University
invites applications for IMLS fellowships for studies toward the PhD
degree.  The fellowships are funded by a Laura Bush 21st Century
Librarian
Grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
At
least four fellowships of $40,000/year (including tuition and research
stipend) will be awarded.

The library and information science community is in critical need of
professionals who have the knowledge and skills to develop and manage
digital information services.  The goal of this project is to prepare
new
faculty who will be well trained in information systems and
technologies
and who willl have the knowledge and skills to conduct research about
digital libraries and the management of digital information.

Study in London this summer!

An exciting opportunity to earn six graduate LIS credits while living in central London is being offered by the Florida State University College of Information.

Two multimedia production courses, taught from June 26-August 7, 2008 at the FSU London Centre, will use London and the surrounding areas as a backdrop for creating projects such as podcasts, websites, short films, and digital photography. No prior experience with these media is required. Most 2-day per week classes will be field trip based.

Other pertinent information: The two courses being offered are:
LIS 5313: Design and Production of Media Resources
LIS 5362: Design and Production of Network Multimedia

Participants must take *both* courses and they will be focused on application of media to libraries and teaching and learning. Students will have the opportunity to apply course material to their current work situation if desired.

The FSU London Centre is housed in a 17th century building that FSU owns in the heart of 'literary London' and very close to the shopping district and to the theater district. It is less that one block from the British Museum. Students live there or in nearby apartments. London provides superb cultural exposure. The variety of arts, theatre, performances, and other cultural venues available in London is stunning, and almost all of them provide student rates. Often the school has inexpensive play tickets available. London, like New York, has a half price booth for play tickets on the day of performances. London has some of the best museums, historical attractions, and buildings in the world.

Cost is $7125 for both in-state and out-of-state participants. The fee includes all registration and instructional costs for up to 6 undergraduate or graduate credit hours; program social/cultural activities; health insurance; international student ID card; T-shirt; full-time academic and administrative support. IMLS Findings from the Study of IMLS Youth Programs, 1998-2003

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is proud to announce the release of Museums and Libraries Engaging America's Youth: Final Report of a Study of IMLS Youth Programs, 1998-2003. The study, which is part of IMLS's initiative, Museums and Libraries Engaging America's Youth, examined Institute-funded programs for youth aged 9-19 and surveyed nearly 400 museum and library programs about their goals, strategies, impact, and outcomes. The year-long study was conducted for IMLS by the Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI), a nonprofit learning research organization based in Edgewater, MD, that focuses on understanding informal learning. Workshops were held at IMLS offices with a Youth Action Committee (see http://www.imls.gov/about/youth_build.shtm) and representatives of select grants to develop a set of case studies to illustrate effective practices. Companion publications in the Nine to Nineteen: Youth in Museums and Libraries series include a practitioners' guide and a policy brief set for release in 2008. Museums and libraries bring unique assets to youth development, according to the study. They include dedicated, knowledgeable staff; authentic objects, artifacts, and information resources; opportunities for personalized, hands-on learning; support for cognitive and social development; and experiences to help parents, families, and caregivers make learning fun and rewarding. According to the study, the most effective youth programs: * include long-term, trusting, supportive relationships between and among youth, staff, and other adults; * partner with community-based organizations and other cultural institutions; * substantively involve youth in program design and decision making; and, * regularly assess or evaluate, using what's learned to improve the program and strengthen other youth development efforts. IMLS has a long-standing commitment to funding grants and sponsoring research on the subject of how both preschool and school-age children learn, and how museums and libraries support such learning. Grants are awarded through two programs: discretionary and state programs. Between 1998 and 2003, through its discretionary grant programs, IMLS funded an estimated $25 million in grants that engaged youth aged 9-19 in productive educational activities that improved their skills and relationships. For the same period, through its state program, IMLS funded an estimated $214 million in programs to support youth services. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The University of California, Santa Barbara invites candidates to apply for its Library Fellowship Program to serve a two-year post-graduate appointment in the university libraries. UA’s DigIn Program Offers Education, Training for Careers in Today’s Digital Information Environment

Students and working professionals interested in careers in digital information have until Feb. 1 to apply to The University of Arizona's online graduate-level certificate program in digital information management. The program, commonly known as "DigIn," is offered exclusively by the UA's School of Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona.

The program prepares students to build and manage digital collections in a variety of government and private settings, including libraries, archives and museums. Also, the students in the program acquire practical applied technology skills, along with a solid foundation in the theory and strategy underpinning digital collections.

The digitization and creation of collections of books, photographs, museum archives, artifacts, documents, film and video, and other kinds of resources has exploded over the last several years. This has created a demand for individuals with both an understanding of the information management disciplines and also technical knowledge and skills needed to create, manage and support digital information collections.

Those admitted will become part of the DigIn program’s second cohort of students, who begin taking courses in the summer of 2008.

The program starts with an intensive hands-on course in applied technology covering the basics of the Linux operating system and also fundamentals of web servers, databases and scripting applications commonly used in today’s digital information environment.

In subsequent courses, students are introduced to strategic technology planning and project management; creating, managing, and preserving digital collections; and basic principles of the information professions. Students will learn to apply key concepts and technologies through case studies, applications, theory, and hands-on work with metadata, content management systems and real-life digital collections. Students complete the certificate with a capstone course involving an individual project and electronic portfolio. Many complete the six-class 18-credit hour online course of study in 15 months, and extended options are available.

The DigIn program has been created in partnership with the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records. The certificate is administered by the UA Office of Continuing Education and Outreach. Admissions requirements include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and other stipulations of the School of Information Resources and Library Sciences and the UA Graduate College.

DigIn is currently supported with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which will also be providing a generous number of scholarships for the new cohort of students starting in summer of 2008. Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship-Call for Submissions

The Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship -- Call for Submissions

The Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship is designed to allow qualified
children's librarians to spend a month or more reading and studying
children's literature at the Baldwin Library of the George A. Smathers
Libraries, University of Florida, Gainesville. The Baldwin Library
contains a special collection of 85,000 volumes of children's
literature published mostly before 1950. The fellowship is endowed in memory of
Louise Seaman Bechtel and Ruth M. Baldwin and provides each Fellow with
a stipend of $4,000.

Award Criteria

Candidates must have the following qualifications to be considered:

* Personal membership in the Association for Library Service to
Children.

* Currently working in direct service to children, or retired members
who completed their careers in direct service to children. If selected,
retired Fellowship winners would agree to present a minimum of three
public programs based on their research project to children in
libraries or schools following the completion of their Fellowship period.

* At least 8 years professional experience in direct service to
children.

* A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program.

* Willingness to write a report about his/her study. The report will be
submitted to the ALSC Office for distribution to the Bechtel Committee
and for possible inclusion in Children and Libraries, and to the Director
of the Smathers Libraries and the Director of the Center for the Study of
Children's Literature and Media at the University of Florida.

Applications must include the following:

* A description of the topic of study for the fellowship period.

* Demonstration of ongoing commitment to motivating children to read.

IMLS fellowships-Drexel University

The College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University
invites applications for IMLS fellowships for studies toward the PhD
degree.  The fellowships are funded by a Laura Bush 21st Century
Librarian
Grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
At
least four fellowships of $40,000/year (including tuition and research
stipend) will be awarded.

The library and information science community is in critical need of
professionals who have the knowledge and skills to develop and manage
digital information services.  The goal of this project is to prepare
new
faculty who will be well trained in information systems and
technologies
and who willl have the knowledge and skills to conduct research about
digital libraries and the management of digital information.

The application procedure is the same as applying for our PhD program.
In
your personal statement, however, you should state your interests in
this
IMLS fellowship and discuss how your background and research interest
would match its goals.  Applications will be accepted until February 1,
2008 but you are encouraged to submit applications earlier to receive
full
consideration.  All Fellows will start their studies in September 2008.
