The top three boards ended with draws, Geoff's draw on board 1 all the more impressive after having gone a piece down early in the game, attention then turned to the bottom two boards, Derek playing on board 5 ended a tough game on the wrong side of victory bringing an impressive season for him to an end, his stats read played 13, won 7, drawn 5 and the unlucky 13th and final game of the season lost. We now needed a win on board 4 to win, easier said than done when your under pressure, unfortunately it wasnt to be our year with board 5 going to Rushall. Ernie, playing on Board 3, also had an early finish but with the opposite result. His opponent walked into a combination resulting in the loss of his Queen and a straightforward win ensued. The games on Boards 1 & 2 were not so quick or straightforward. I walked into a sacrifice on move 5 and spent the whole game on the back foot and with my King stuck in the middle of the board protecting a Knight. My opponent’s aggressive tactics looked like forcing a win but he sacrificed one piece too many and was unable to sustain the attack and, in the complications that followed, I pinned his Queen against his King. Unfortunately, with only 2 minutes left on my clock, I was never going to make my material advantage count in the time available so a draw was agreed. Rob Taylor, playing on Board 1, never looked in trouble against a player graded a full 33 points higher than him. However, too many pawns left on the board made it difficult to make any progress for either player and so a draw was agreed, leaving the match tied at 2-2. Once again, Fenton have dominated this Division and have finished 4 points clear of our nearest rivals, Alsager ‘C’. A single win is all we have to show for a disappointing season in the Division in which we were Champions last year. Ernie was first to finish. Playing on Board 3 with the Black pieces Ernie played a Sicilian Defence and was immediately confronted with the Morra Gambit. On the premise that the best way to refute a gambit is to accept it, Ernie gratefully took the pawn and managed to hold on to it. Shortly afterwards he won another pawn, followed by a bishop, and the inevitable win followed. Carl, playing with the White pieces on Board 2, had the advantage of winning the exchange of a knight for a rook early on. Most of the pawns stayed on the board, and the blocked position meant that neither player was able to make much headway and a draw was agreed. John White, playing with the White pieces on Board 4, had what looked like an unstoppable attack. He won the exchange of a rook for a bishop but failed to find the right moves to press home his advantage and proceeded to convert a winning middle game into a lost endgame. This levelled the match at 1 ˝ - 1 ˝ and all eyes turned to Geoff on Board 1. Geoff surprised everybody by actually Castling, albeit Queen side, and had a solid position for most of the game. He eventually reached an endgame with a Knight and Bishop each and an equal number of pawns and a draw was finally agreed, leaving the match tied at 2-2.
