Go Green this Lunar New Year with “good-as-new” $2 notes

To NUS “Good-as-New” $2 Notes for “Hong Bao” An initiative by Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Association of Banks in Singapore

Did You Know? 钞票如新普天乐, 环保为重遍地春! The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) prints and issues 100 million BRAND NEW $2 polymer notes to the banks each Lunar New Year. However, only about half of the new $2 notes issued are required to meet normal circulation demand. This is a waste of resources and is not environmentally-friendly. Printing the excess 50 million $2 notes uses more than 200,000 kWh of electricity!

Go Green… This year, MAS has embarked on an initiative to encourage the public to use “good-as-new” $2 notes for “hong bao”. The “good-as-new” $2 notes are clean and crisp notes which are retrieved right after Lunar New Year last year. These $2 notes will be made available at all retail banks in Singapore from 21 January 2013.

Take Action Now! Do your part for the environment by using “good-as-new” $2 notes this Lunar New Year. For more information, visit the MAS website.

Are you ABLE to be a Water Volunteer or make returning tray fun?

Well done, NUS community! Let’s keep up the effort made for a sustainABLE NUS. You may be interested to get involved in environmental initiatives for the wider Singapore community. Here are two ways:

Together, we have fostered the good habit of returning our trays after meals at NUS. Not only does clearing your own tray lead to a quicker turnover of tables, it is an important step to take in waste management. With such a tray-return tradition on campus, the NUS community can contribute ideas through Project I (+Fun) to value-add to Singapore’s dining experience.

Project I(+Fun) intends to kick-start behaviour change by introducing fun and interactive ideas. The first phase of Project I(+Fun) is a ideas sourcing competition to get members of the public to contribute ideas to make the behaviour fun.

Help Give Your Pen a Second Life

Save That Pen came about during a cleaning session in a NUS student clubroom, when three friends realised that the pens being tossed away could still be used, or reused with refills. Without an avenue to recycle these pens, the students were led to reflect upon our consumption culture – we take objects like pens for granted; when we’re done with one, we throw it away, knowing there are a thousand more waiting to be bought at the nearest store. What can we realistically do about such a situation?

The new PAPER Toss game for Administrative Officers

Currently, there are paper recycling boxes located near printers in administrative offices to facilitate office staff to recycle. However, a study by Krantz and McClannahan (1994) discovered that only 28% of paper discarded would be recycled when there was one central recycling receptacle, most of the discarded paper goes into the trash bins when it is recyclable. This is a stark contrast from the recycling of 88% discarded paper when the paper recycling bins are placed in close proximity to users.

Turn off The Vampires!

Vampires have been lurking around all year round without you knowing it but fret not because Santa is coming to town!

Vampires are electronic equipments that draw electricity even when they are “switched off”. The extra loads that these equipments draw are known as phantom loads. University of California Berkeley reports that phantom load is responsible for 6% of residential electricity used. In an office, perennial suspects include computer displays, speakers, printers, and copiers among others. The blinking orange light on your PC monitors’ switch button when you have shut down your computer is one indicator that the monitor is still drawing electricity. In general, any light or display from inactive electronic equipment means that electricity is being consumed.

Carpooling

Carpooling has sprung up in the past few months. By sharing your car journey with more than one person, you reduce each person’s travel costs such as the ever increasing petrol price, bus and train fares. It is also seen as an environmentally friendly and sustainable way to travel as it reduces carbon emissions and traffic congestion on the road.

Start now by finding a ride around your neighbourhood. Your neighbours could be working in the same building!

Overhead Bicycle Route

Green transport refers to any means of sustainable transport with low impact to the environment, and includes human or animal muscle-powered vehicles, low-carbon fueled vehicles, or any kind of vehicle using a renewable source of energy for its propulsion.

Since most of the NUS populace occupies the Kent Ridge campus, it is therefore sensible to focus on this campus. A study was done to first go through the general status of the existing routes to see if they are suitable for cycling. Then, the more suitable routes will be identified. Lastly, suggestions will be made for future considerations of implementing smaller green vehicles in the campus.

Ad advisory letter from Deputy President (Administration) was circulated on 04 September 2009 to encourage the NUS community not to use bottled water whenever possible. OES endeavours to monitor the tangible influence of the advisory with University Hall as the representative sample where we noted a 38% decrease in bottled water procurement. An average of 1131 bottles per month purchased before September 2009 was reduced to 697 bottles per month average over the period of September 2009 to July 2011.

Bikeboard - Future Sustainable Transport?

Green transport can also be considered as an alternative form for transportation within campus. Sustainable transport refers to any vehicle that has a low impact on the environment, and is fuel-efficient. Such transport is not only efficient, but also convenient for individuals like staff who is required to travel extensively on campus (E.g. staff from the Office of Campus Security, the Office of Estate and Development etc). It can also be used as a means of transport for students or academic staff living on campus.

Kent Ridge Heritage Trail Storyboard

The National University of Singapore (NUS) sits on a unique piece of real estate – Kent Ridge (formerly known as Pasir Panjang Ridge). In collaboration with Ascendas and NParks, six storyboards were erected to deliver a heritage value of this ridge. The Kent Ridge Heritage Trail starts from Clementi Road and ends at the Kent Ridge Park. Kent Ridge has a rich military history as it was on this ridge that the last battle for Singapore was fought. These storyboards explain the vegetation of the different periods in Singapore’s history and development of Science Park 1.

The Building and Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA) launched their Green Mark Program in January 2005. The objective of the program is to promote sustainability construction and environment-friendly buildings in Singapore, through the implementation of green and innovative building design and technologies that improve energy and water efficiency

As part of the government initiative for the public sector to take the lead on environmental sustainability, NUS has identified 23 existing buildings with air-conditioned area equal or greater than 10,000m2 to be Green Mark certified by year 2020. All new buildings in NUS are required to incorporate green, innovative building design and technologies to reduce environment impact and achieve energy and water efficiency, and to obtain Green Mark certification from BCA.

Since its inception in 2007, the World Wide Fund (WWF) Earth Hour has grown to become a global movement, where households and businesses all over the world switch off their non-essential lights for one hour on the same day to raise awareness for the need to take action against climate change. In 2009, over 4000 cities in 88 countries, including Singapore, participated in this initiative.

NUS joined numerous other individuals and organisations worldwide in observing Earth Hour by switching off all non-essential lights in its participating halls of residence, offices and other premises around the campus.

About Save That Pen @ NUS

Save That Pen came about during an annual cleaning session at a student clubroom in NUS, where three friends realized that the pens being tossed away could still be used, or reused with refills. Without an avenue to recycle these pens, the girls were led to reflect upon our pen-using culture—we take pens for granted; when we’re done with one, there are a thousand more waiting to be bought at the nearest bookstore. It was then that the girls decided to start a project about pens and send a recycling message out to people who use the most pens: students. Hence, Save That Pen was borne.

NUS Recycling Masterplan Secures NEA 3R Funding

To support new waste minimisation and recycling projects, NEA launched an $8mil 3R Fund last year. To date, we received 43 applications, of which 9 were approved with grants amounting to $137,000, and 18 are still being evaluated. One of the applications approved is the National University of Singapore’s Recycling Master Plan to improve the recycling infrastructure and enhance the 3R culture in the University. The project is expected to reduce or recycle 540 tons of waste over 3 years.

Used Cooking Oil

Cooking oil recycling is a process where vegetable oil and animal fats are collected and processed to produce biodiesel. The newly formed biodiesel can then be used as a fuel for vehicles or as an additive to reduce levels hydrocarbons from diesel-powered vehicles. Although biodiesel is not a commonly used transport fuel for vehicles in Singapore, it promises to be a viable alternative, especially in times of increasing oil prices and a greater need for a sustainable environment.

Waste Management - Project Microwave Packaging

Since August 2009, Styrofoam takeaway food boxes in NUS canteens have been replaced with the more eco-friendly Microwave Packaging food boxes.

This is an initiative started by Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE),which the Office of Estate Development (OED) – Retail and Dining has agreed enthusiastically and supported the implementation throughout NUS canteens. All 5 NUS canteens - Frontier, TechnoEdge, The Terrace, The Deck and Central Square - are part of this green initiative, although not every stall has switched to using these green label boxes due to certain packaging constraints.

Green Alert! - 350: Call For Climate Action Day

19 October 2009
To: NUS Faculty, Staff Members and Students

24 OCT is INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION

Join us in >>> the global movement to stop the climate crisis!

Why the number 350?
It's safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere in parts per million (ppm)

Then..where are we right now?
We are currently at approximately 390ppm. Together, we need to get back to 350ppm as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change.

On 24th of October, International Day of Climate Action
On this day, groups of people all over the world will organise an action to publicise the importance of 350ppm.
Photos of the collective actions worldwide will be sent to the world leaders in time for the Copenhagen climate treaty negotiations this December.
Together, we form a voice to call for a fair, effective and strong climate treaty to put a brake on climate change.

Meatout Thursdays - a step forward in the fight against climate change !

Climate change can never be sufficiently addressed without reflecting on our diet. According to the UN FAO Livestock Long Shadow Report, the meat industry is contributing to 18% of global greenhouse gases, that is more than all cars, planes, trucks and ships added together. Climate scientists such as Dr Rajendra Pachauri, the Chief of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have also urged global citizens to cut down on meat consumption as it is one of the most effective ways to reduce our individual’s carbon footprint.

Why Advisory on The Use of Bottled Water

Environmental pollution and ecological damage are the two major environmental impacts arising from the production of bottled water. Often times, bottled water manufacturers purchase rights from local governments to pump water from their rivers and streams. This results in arid land that can no longer support farming and cause irreversible damage to the ecology. In undeveloped countries, the poor who live off these precious water resources are even refused the right to access the clean water for their very own survival.

Hybrid Car

NUS Campus Security goes green with its newest addition of Honda’s fourth generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) Hybrid Car. Whilst there are many types of hybrid cars in the market, the Director of Campus Security, Mr Seah Thian Pau, explained that the advantage of the IMA lies in the use of regenerative braking. This technology captures some of the energy lost through deceleration, and reuses this energy to help accelerate the vehicle. This results in an improvement in the efficiency of the acceleration, which ultimately reduces the fuel consumption. In addition, vehicles equipped with the IMA automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop; and uses the electric motor instead of the convention fuel motor to rapidly spin it back up when the brake paddle is released, which equates to MORE FUEL SAVED!

Stop Styrofoam!

Kent Ridge Hall, one of the 6 Halls of Residences from the National University of Singapore, has implemented measures to gradually reduce, and later completely remove the use of Styrofoam boxes. It was a tough decision, but we went ahead with it nonetheless. Now, we can proudly claim that Kent Ridge Hall is Styrofoam-free, and is still taking active steps to conserve our environment.
