According to the Straits Time article “What Rubbish” on June 15 2009, National Environment Agency (NEA) spokesman said: “Throwing waste such as leftover food and drinks into the bins contaminates the recyclable materials and renders them non-recyclable.”

Do We Really Need the Plastic Bags?

Most of these bags and boxes will be thrown away within 15 minutes of their use, forming a significant proportion of wastes generated in campus. Many of us take the bags out of habit, simply because they are offered. Yet this is clearly not sustainable.

Following a detection of water leakage at Kent Ridge Hall in Nov, a thorough comparison of the water usage has been carried out to investigate the beginning of the leakage. It has been found that the water leakage has been ongoing for a long time, and hence incorporation of the water consumption of Kent Ridge Hall into the InterHall Environmental Awards competition will prove to be meaningless.

      <title>Used Cooking Oil</title>
      <description>
Cooking oil recycling is a process where vegetable oil and animal fats are collected and processed to produce biodiesel. The newly formed biodiesel can then be used as a fuel for vehicles or as an additive to reduce levels hydrocarbons from diesel-powered vehicles. Although biodiesel is not a commonly used transport fuel for vehicles in Singapore, it promises to be a viable alternative, especially in times of increasing oil prices and a greater need for a sustainable environment.

Since August 2009, Styrofoam takeaway food boxes in NUS canteens have been replaced with the more eco-friendly Microwave Packaging food boxes.

This is an initiative started by Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE),which the Office of Estate Development (OED) – Retail and Dining has agreed enthusiastically and supported the implementation throughout NUS canteens. All 5 NUS canteens - Frontier, TechnoEdge, The Terrace, The Deck and Central Square - are part of this green initiative, although not every stall has switched to using these green label boxes due to certain packaging constraints.

      <title>Green Alert! - 350: Call For Climate Action Day</title>
      <description>
19 October 2009
To: NUS Faculty, Staff Members and Students

24 OCT is INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION

Join us in >>> the global movement to stop the climate crisis!

Why the number 350?
It's safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere in parts per million (ppm)

Then..where are we right now?
We are currently at approximately 390ppm. Together, we need to get back to 350ppm as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change.

On 24th of October, International Day of Climate Action
On this day, groups of people all over the world will organise an action to publicise the importance of 350ppm.
Photos of the collective actions worldwide will be sent to the world leaders in time for the Copenhagen climate treaty negotiations this December.
Together, we form a voice to call for a fair, effective and strong climate treaty to put a brake on climate change.

      <description>
Meatout Thursdays - a step forward in the fight against climate change !

Climate change can never be sufficiently addressed without reflecting on our diet. According to the UN FAO Livestock Long Shadow Report, the meat industry is contributing to 18% of global greenhouse gases, that is more than all cars, planes, trucks and ships added together. Climate scientists such as Dr Rajendra Pachauri, the Chief of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have also urged global citizens to cut down on meat consumption as it is one of the most effective ways to reduce our individual’s carbon footprint.

      <description>
I am an Environmental Engineering student in NUS and interned at OES during the June holidays in 2009, working on a project about the feasibility of green transport in campus. Throughout the internship, I cycled around campus to gather data by taking pictures, measuring path widths and estimating gradients.

      <title>Why Advisory on The Use of Bottled Water</title>
      <description>
Environmental pollution and ecological damage are the two major environmental impacts arising from the production of bottled water. Often times, bottled water manufacturers purchase rights from local governments to pump water from their rivers and streams. This results in arid land that can no longer support farming and cause irreversible damage to the ecology. In undeveloped countries, the poor who live off these precious water resources are even refused the right to access the clean water for their very own survival.

      <title>Hybrid Car</title>
      <description>
NUS Campus Security goes green with its newest addition of Honda’s fourth generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) Hybrid Car. Whilst there are many types of hybrid cars in the market, the Director of Campus Security, Mr Seah Thian Pau, explained that the advantage of the IMA lies in the use of regenerative braking. This technology captures some of the energy lost through deceleration, and reuses this energy to help accelerate the vehicle. This results in an improvement in the efficiency of the acceleration, which ultimately reduces the fuel consumption. In addition, vehicles equipped with the IMA automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop; and uses the electric motor instead of the convention fuel motor to rapidly spin it back up when the brake paddle is released, which equates to MORE FUEL SAVED!
