Ohlone College 8th Annual NASA Night Examines Life Elsewhere in the Universe

Fremont, CA — Exploration of our solar system has revealed the tremendous diversity of planets, moons and other celestial bodies – yet no evidence of life beyond Earth. However, over the last 15 years, precise astronomical measurement has allowed over 400 planets to be discovered around other stars. The smallest planet detected so far is about twice the size of Earth, however the new Kepler space telescope, run by NASA Ames Research Center, should be able to detect Earth-like planets.

Dr. Colin Goldblatt, NASA researcher of geochemistry and co-evolution of life and Earth's climate, comes to Ohlone College for the 8th Annual Ohlone College NASA Night, Tuesday, November 10 at 7pm. Dr. Goldblatt will discuss the following questions: Is there life on these planets? What would it be like and how would we go about finding it? How does studying the Earth help us answer these questions?

Dr. Goldblatt completed his Ph.D. in the UK at the University of East Anglia, School of Environmental Sciences. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA Ames Research Center, working in the NASA Astrobiology Institute. He researches the co-evolution of life, Earth's climate and geochemistry. He focuses on the evolution of oxygen and nitrogen in Earth's atmosphere, long term climate change and what it tells us about life elsewhere in the universe. He has been involved in Antarctic ocean-ography, evaluating a 'geo-engineering' solution to climate change and evaluating the accuracy of a model for the strength of the greenhouse effect used in a climate model.

Pulitzer Prize Winning Broadway Hit, Rabbit Hole on Stage at Ohlone College

Fremont, CA —A child’s tragic death, a cold marriage bed, quantum immortality…and a girl fight at Whole Foods? These disparate elements come together with a big splash of black comedy. The Ohlone College Department of Theatre and Dance presents David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2007 Pulitzer Prize Winning Broadway Hit Rabbit Hole, directed by Tom Blank.

The script is wise and witty, as it takes you through a family’s journey through heartbreak, grief, and forgiveness. The five character play focuses on Becca and Howie, an upwardly mobile couple, and their marital struggles as they cope with the death of their only child, four-year old Danny, killed in an auto accident. Becca’s well-meaning mom and trashy sister attempt to lift their spirits, each in her own off-kilter way. Becca and Howie’s lives are further complicated when the young driver who killed their son contacts them seeking his own closure.

Bringing what the New York Times described as “honesty, accuracy and humor in the details…polished to a high, reflective sheen, the dialogue is blessed with Mr. Lindsay-Abaire's customary grace and wit, but never sounds less than organic.”

Jacob Guilbeau Debuts as Assistant Conductor of Ohlone Community Band

Fremont, CA — The Ohlone Community Band presents their first concert of the fall with the conducting debut of assistant conductor Jacob Guilbeau. The concert honors the 100th anniversary of Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in Eb”, and features a variety of classical and contemporary pieces.

At the age of 11, with the encouragement of his middle school band director, Diane Robin, Jacob Guilbeau began his euphonium studies in Lafayette, Louisiana. Jacob and his family moved to San Ramon, California when he was 14. Although initially a Computer Science major, Jacob decided to make music his focus and enrolled in the music performance program at CSU East Bay, where he graduates this fall. It was at CSUEB that he began studying under Tony Clements in euphonium performance. Jacob joined the Ohlone Community Band in 2006 playing the euphonium and this year debuts as assistant conductor. For the fall concert, Guilbeau will conduct Toccata Marziale by R. Vaughan Williams.

The concert repertoire also includes Kenneth Alford’s Army of the Nile, Verdi’s overture to La Forza del Destino, Bruce Broughton’s Silverado, The Hobbits movement from The Lord of the Rings Symphony by de Meij and many others. For the complete repertoire visit www.ohlonecommunityband.org.

The Community Band was founded in 1977 as part of the Ohlone College Department of Music and blends both youthful and experienced performers. The Community Band has grown under the baton of past conductors Phil Zahorsky, Rich Levin and Steve Barnhill. Since fall 2007 the Band has been under the direction of Tony Clements.

FREMONT — Call him crazy, but Anish Dave loves Fremont just as ardently as his favorite hockey and football teams.

So when it came time to pick a university, the 18-year-old Irvington High School graduate tossed out his UC acceptance letters and enrolled in Ohlone College. And on Monday, he'll become the youngest member of the city's Human Relations Commission.

"Maybe it sounds crazy, but I love the place I live," Dave said. "I know some people don't have that connection."

NEWARK — James Manuel moved to the United States just a few years ago from his native Philippines.

Being several thousands miles from his homeland, he often makes phone calls to the islands where he grew up, sometimes to speak to relatives, other times to check on his pension checks.

But international phone calls are expensive, and the phone cards Manuel purchased often didn't last nearly as long as advertised.

Little did he know there was a cheaper and more efficient way to do things — over the Internet.

Ohlone College hosts Kim Peek “The Real Rain Man”

A confounding mixture of brilliance and disability that neuroscientists have yet to understand. Kim Peek, the inspiration for the movie Rain Man, and his father come to Ohlone College Friday October 30 at 7pm. Although diagnosed as mentally retarded at birth, Kim Peek has developed a memory that is without equal. Come explore an exciting opportunity to find out what makes the human brain unique as The Ohlone Psychology Club Speaker Series presents Kim Peek “The Real Rain Man”.

Peek is one of a handful of so-called Mega-Savants, celebrated for his remarkable memory. His favorite place is the public library, where he reads as many as eight books a day. “Kim reads the left page [of a book] with his left eye, right page with his right eye and retains about 98% of it,” says Kim’s father, Fran Peek. He has an incredible brain with more than 30 areas of amazing cognitive ability, yet he needs his father’s help with living everyday life. His brain has structural differences that defy explanation, yet may hold insights into how all of our brains store and retrieve information, experience music, and create.

Along with exhibiting displays of extraordinary mental ability, the Peeks preach a message about disability. Fran wants people to learn about accepting people who have differences. “Nobody is ever written off” says Barry Morrow, screenwriter of Rain Man. “[Kim] belies the myth that people with disabilities can’t [achieve amazing growth.]”

Ohlone College Gets a Technology Boost from Movea

Fremont, CA —The Ohlone College Foundation was the proud recipient of over $10,000.00 worth of Gyration Gyro Transport in-air presentation devices from Movea, Inc. a Silicon Valley-based creator of motion-sensing technology for business communications, home entertainment and mobile computing, including the concept for the Nintendo Wii-mote.

“Movea’s Gyro Transports will greatly assist our instructors in their classroom presentations,” said David W. Smith, Executive Director of the Ohlone College Foundation. “Movea was cognizant of the fiscal challenges that we face as a community college, and motivated by the opportunity to expose our faculty and students to enhanced classroom technology,” he added.

The Movea Gyro Transports will be made available to faculty at both the Fremont and Newark campuses of Ohlone College. The Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology is not only “The Greenest College in the World,” but it already features cutting edge classroom technology which will be further enhanced by Movea.

Ohlone center trains students for jobs in green tech sector

Not only did Ohlone College receive platinum LEED certification for its Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology — the highest level offered by the U.S. Green Building Council — it also designed the campus to incorporate teaching of green principles and environmental issues.
