Camden St. Patrick's Parade

Hello everyone,

Barb and I extend an invitaion to all to join us for Camden's St. Patrick's Parade on Saturday, March 19th.

The parade starts at 2:00 PM. The parade is led by St. Patrick himself (Mike Price). The parade order is determined by order of arrival. The Conniff Clan will proceding to the assembly area on Railroad Street at noon. Anyone wishing to join us can come to our house (49 Wolcott Street) in the morning or join us at the assembly area. Cars and drivers welcome. I will try to have all 4 of our O'Pontiacs at the assembly area. O'Pontiac club members can bring their own cars or drive/ride in ours. Wear something green; hats, beads, etc. (avoid orange unless it is mixed with green)(orange GTOs are ok). Many paraders will be passing out candy. Remember to dress for the weather. Give us a call so we can look out for you.

Arrive early because half the fun is walking around and viewing the people and floats. Refreshments and rest rooms are available. The parade lasts about 1 hour. The official after parade party is at Katie & Karl's Restaurant with live music, corned beef dinners and sandwiches, and green beer. The Conniff Clan will be going to the American Legion for Ruben sandwiches and other refreshments. The Legion will have pipers and entertainment galore. Please join us.

A few that I forgot have already been entered and a few that haven't.
Would you like to see information about yourself & your car on here?
It's pretty simple ya know...
All you have to do is take a few minutes with a pen or pencil (which ever you prefer, I'm more of a pen guy myself), a piece of paper, a cup 'o coffee and some thought.
Wanna be extra green and help out the environment?
Well, you can do that too! Just replace the pen/pencil & paper with a keyboard, monitor & e-mail.
After you're done composing the information about yourself and confessing your automotive addictions you can either bring the info to the next meeting (we have them once a month and there's guaranteed to be food) and give a copy to Natalie & I or you can just email the info.
Or...
Maybe you've already submitted info about yourself and want to know information about others. The thing to do then would be to get a hold of the latest roster by emailing John Downing and after you've acquired that person's phone number/email let the harassing begin! Maybe if you bug them long enough they'll end up confessing something you didn't even want to know. Something like "Yes, it's true, I still bathe with a rubber ducky!" or "Sometimes in the middle of the nite I go out in the garage, sit in my driver's seat, grasp the steering wheel while making Vroom! Vroom! noises and all I have on is a pair of socks"
Ok, maybe that's a little too much information, but who knows what you'll find out.
This is your club & site with unlimited space. So get to writing, typing and taking pictures!

Apparently the club website is big enough now to show up in interwebs searching, I still don't know how some people manage to find it.
Anyway...
She recommended me a really good page to add to the 'Sponsors & Links' page.
The page is called "A Guide to Restoring Your Classic Car" and it contains an assortment of links for how-tos and information.
So go check it out!
Ford to End Mercury

Ford Motor Co. is preparing to phase out its 71-year old Mercury brand, adding to the list of storied Detroit nameplates that reached the end of the road in recent years as the industry has become more competitive.

Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally and his top lieutenants have won the backing of key members of the Ford family and are expected to seek approval from the car maker's board to kill Mercury after years of dwindling sales, a person familiar with the matter said Thursday.

Mercury was created in 1939 by Edsel Ford, the son of legendary founder Henry Ford. It was prompted by General Motors Co.'s strategy of building a "ladder of brands" that included Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac. That allowed GM to appeal to a wide range of customers and move them up the brand and price ladder as their incomes rose, enabling GM to pass Ford as the world's largest auto maker.

Mercury would be the latest Detroit brand to die since 2000. As part of its bankruptcy restructuring last year, GM shut down its Pontiac and Saturn divisions, and Hummer appears to be headed for the same fate. Earlier this decade GM phased out Oldsmobile and Chrysler Group LLC killed off Plymouth.

Mercury's future has been in question ever since Mr. Mulally arrived as CEO in 2006 and mapped out a turnaround plan that called for phasing out niche brands and putting most of the company's resources into its Ford division. Since then, Ford has sold Jaguar, Land Rover and most recently Volvo.

A person familiar with the company's plans said Mr. Mulally and other senior executives recently persuaded the company's chairman, William C. Ford Jr., and a cousin of his who works at the company, Elena Ford, to phase out Mercury. Elena Ford had strongly opposed previous efforts to shut down the brand.

News of the plan was first reported by Bloomberg News.

Mercury was supposed to give Ford a midpriced car that fit between the inexpensive Ford models and its more luxurious Lincolns.

For several decades that strategy seemed to work, with Mercurys such as the Cougar and Marquis selling well. But by the 1980s Mercury had little identity of its own—a problem that would become endemic for most of Detroit. Most Mercury models were simply Fords fitted with different grilles and tail lights. GM did the same, fielding nearly identical cars as Buicks, Chevrolets, Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles.

In the 1990s, Ford imported sporty cars made by its European arm and sold them under the Mercury nameplate, but the effort did little to raise the brand's profile.

In recent years, Ford tried to market Mercury to women drivers, but sales continued to dwindle. In 2009, Ford sold 92,299 Mercury vehicles, down from 359,143 in 2000.

"Mercury is a brand that has lost its meaning in the American automotive marketplace and it isn't worth trying to change that," Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl said in a statement.

Under Mr. Mulally, Mercury received few new models. The Sable sedan—a knockoff of the Ford Taurus—was phased out in 2009 and production of the Mountaineer sport-utility vehicle and Grand Marquis large sedan will end this year.

That leaves Mercury with only two models: the Milan, a midsized car, and the Mariner, a small SUV. Ford planned to launch a Mercury version of its Ford Focus compact, but Mr. Mulally was faced with deciding whether it would be worth investing more in the marque.

Ford spokesman Mark Truby declined to confirm any discussions about the end of Mercury.

Stephen Munroe, general manager of Statewide Ford Lincoln Mercury in Van Wert, Ohio, said he was untroubled by the news. He said it would simplify his inventory since many of the Mercury cars have "sister" vehicles in the Ford brand.

The challenge, Mr. Munroe said, would be to eliminate Mercury without hurting the current good consumer buzz about Ford.

But the hundreds of dealers that sell only Lincolns and Mercurys may find it difficult to continue without the volume from Mercury. A person familiar with the matter at Ford said the company hopes to merge many of those dealers with existing Ford dealerships or shut them.

Mercury had 1,780 U.S. dealers at the end of 2009, according to a Ford filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ford officials also are engaged in an intense review of the future of Lincoln, which has struggled as well despite its fairly new line-up. A separate person familiar with the company's thinking said all options are under consideration for Lincoln, which hasn't measured up to becoming a luxury brand able to compete with Mercedes, BMW, Lexus or the revitalized Cadillac.

Stop the gas tax!

Cap & Trade is an Energy Tax

The Left believes if gas costs more you'll drive less. That's why they want to increase the gas tax, but they don't want you to know.

They'll try to say it is not a gasoline tax because it doesn’t raise the current 18.4 cents per gallon Federal Gasoline Excise Tax. The details reveal their proposal is a new tax on top of the existing Federal Gasoline Excise Tax. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who helped craft this new gas tax, admitted the higher costs for energy companies “will be passed on” to motorists at the pump.

Don't be fooled by their "spin". This bill is a Gas Tax on you and your family.

Remember to vote Jim Patterson on to the Board of Directors for POCI

Attention Six Nations Members: Here is an opportunity for you to contribute to the success of our chapter financially!
You can help us earn $200.00 from POCI by voting in the election of Board members found in your March issue of Smoke Signals.
The cost to you is .44 cents for the stamp to mail your ballot in.
I will provide a book of stamps at the next meeting to try and off-set the cost to you if needed. To earn the $200.00 we must have total participation by everyone as it is a competition between chapters for our involvement. I am running for a position on the Board so we can have even more influence in the direction POCI grows in the future. I am in the only region to have competition with an opponent so also need your support and why I offer to pay for the stamp. All the other candidates you just circle along with my name and you have voted. After the candidate votes are some questions the club would like your opinion on. The bottom of the ballot has a place to fill in our chapter name "Six Nations Chapter #52. Your Ballot is found in the center of your March Smoke Signals Magazine. All Ballots must be postmarked by March 31st, 2010 so please do it now before you forget or misplace it. May you all be blessed with a delicious supper tonight and a sound sleep filled with Happy Pontiac Dreams.
Jim

Plainville's Nature's Fare Restaurant closes after battle with economy, salmonella

Cicero, NY -- Plainville's Nature's Fare Restaurant, an institution in Cicero since 1974, shut down abruptly and permanently today.

Owner Mark W. Bitz said a combination of hard economic times and the difficulty in cooking and preparing between 100 and 200 fresh, raw turkeys a day while avoiding food-borne illness led him to the decision.

The restaurant served its last meal Monday night and the company's 35 employees began learning of the closure when they arrived for work this morning.

Customers who had reservations to dine received calls from the restaurant canceling them. A sign greeted those who walked up to the door at 8450 Brewerton Road: "We are closed permanently. Thank you for your patronage."

Bitz said he made the decision after learning from the Onondaga County Health Department this morning that two suspected cases of salmonella in January had been traced to the restaurant.

"We've done everything we can think of to prevent it," Bitz said.

Cases of salmonella traced to the restaurant had declined from about 20 in 2008 to seven in 2009 as the restaurant hired a quality control person, instituted new sanitary and washing procedures and took other steps, he said.

"We've not been able to drive it to zero," he said.

Bitz said the restaurant had seen business decline 15 percent with the recession, and that without growth in the area, he saw little prospect of that business returning.

"We just reached the decision that the model no longer works," Bitz said.

Bitz said he planned to contact people in the restaurant business to see if they wanted to buy the site and operate it under a model that does not involve working with fresh, raw poultry.

Hopefully, a restaurateur would hire at least some of his staff, he said. The workers will be paid their unused sick, vacation or personal time.

County Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow said she learned late Monday afternoon that two county residents had contracted salmonella of a subtype that had previously been associated with Plainville's Nature’s Fare. Interviews revealed that both patients had dined at the restaurant, she said.

When she called Bitz with the news this morning, Bitz told her he would close, she said.

Bitz and his staff had worked closely with her department for more than a year and aggressively addressed all concerns, but poultry is susceptible to bacterial infection, she said.

“It’s really unfortunate,” Morrow said. “We know how important Plainville's Nature’s Fare has been to this community. But I really respect Mr. Bitz’s decision because above all, we don’t want any harm to our residents’ health.”

Bitz helped his father, Robert, open the restaurant in 1974 as an adjunct to their Plainville Turkey Farm business. The Bitz family sold the farm in 2007 to Hain Celestial Group, but retained the restaurant under the new name. It served about 250,000 customers annually, he said.

Bitz is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress in the 25th Congressional District, the seat now held by Democrat Dan Maffei.

Cash-for-clunkers gems: Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs and one infamous Bentley meet the end of the road

By now, the high-profile casualties of cash-for-clunkers are well documented: a Bentley Continental R and an Aston Martin DB7 Volante from 1997 and a 1985 Maserati Quattroporte all perished under the government-funded incentive program.

But scratching beneath the surface reveals that scores of everyday enthusiast rides such as Mustangs, Camaros and even some Corvettes met ignominious endings by having their engines destroyed and their bodies crushed.

While it’s likely that many of the nearly 700,000 clunkers turned in actually were at the end of their roads, the final report released by the government reveals the demise of plenty of affordable, likely still-fixable cars that could have been enjoyed by collectors of all ages.

Ford’s sales were boosted considerably by the clunkers incentive, and the Focus was the fourth best-seller among new cars bought under the program. But many of its favorite cars of yesteryear were scrapped--most notably, the stable of Mustangs on the nation’s roads is considerably smaller. A total of 1,611 pony cars from 1984 to 2008 were turned in, including--surprisingly--one ’08 model. Yes, many of these were the forgettable rides of the 1980s and ’90s, before the car was remade similar to its original iconic form earlier this decade, but it’s still a considerable figure of sportier-than-average cars taken off the road.

The Blue Oval also saw the end of 107 Taurus SHOs from 1993 to 1999, and a whopping 3,061 Thunderbirds from 1984 to 1995. Stunningly, a 2005 T-Bird, one of the 1950s-styled coupes Ford brought back on a limited basis, also was slated for scrapping.

Luxury cars were not immune to the crusher, either. A 1999 Mercedes C43 AMG, a 2000 Jaguar XK8 convertible and a 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster will not be buffed or polished again. Additionally, two 1991 BMWs, a M3 and a M5 never again will be ultimate driving machines, and a slew of 7-series, including 100 from 1988, are done.

The Continental R was perhaps the single most infamous car taken off the road. In addition to its inglorious clunkers ending, the car also is notable because 70 percent of all Bentleys ever built are still in existence, though that’s a pre-clunkers figure released by the company.

Other top-shelf rides that saw the reaper included a 1989 Maserati 222E and four 1985 Biturbos.

The Cadillac of clunkers was the Escalade, as 72 copies of the hulking, fuel-hungry luxury ute are toast, with 68 of those from the 1999 to 2000 model years. More than a little surprising: a 2006 STS sedan also received a death sentence.

The General Motors brands also lost plenty of rides favored by car guys and gals. Corvette fans will miss 131 versions the sports car from 1984 to 1995, including 34 convertibles. And though the Camaro crowd rejoiced at the car’s return this year, 1,007 of its predecessors are now history, including at least eight from every year from 1984 to 2000. The early ’90s were particularly brutal, with 127 from 1991 and 116 from 1992 getting handed a blind fold and cigarette.

One Camaro sibling, a 1989 20th Anniversary Trans-Am, also a bit unexpectedly was on the list, as was a 2002 Firebird. They’re joined by a 1987 Buick Grand National GNX, an intercooled, turbocharged marvel highly sought after by collectors.

Perhaps a bit less iconic, 61 Pontiac Fieros from 1985 to 1988 were turned over, and one of the ultimate beater cars, the 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, was trimmed by 185 models.

The third Detroit-based automaker, Chrysler, was the victim of four of the newest clunker trade-ins. One 300 all-wheel-drive model from 2008, two from 2007 and a Hemi-powered ’05 all won’t live to see what plans Fiat has in store for their maker.

One owner of a 2006 Nissan 350Z also turned over the keys, as did those of two 2006 Roush Stage 3 F-150s. Two 2008 Foose F-150s also were among the customs that had a date with the crusher.

Thirteen Porsches and 28 Alfa Romeos also are off the road.

All told, cash-for-clunkers resulted in almost $2.9 billion in rebate claims and boosted the economy considerably this summer. The nation’s fleet is undoubtedly more fuel-efficient, but fewer Mustangs, Camaros and even the random Bentley means it’s also a bit less fun.

More cars needed for Crystal Ball Cruise

Hi
I spoke with some of the Seniors from the Marcellus high school & they told me they are short a lot of cars for the crystal ball cruise. This is a very worthy cause & a very high profile event getting a lot of media coverage. This year PINKS will be involved too! This school has gone the distance to be sure the kids have a very SAFE & fun prom. There is a goodie bag provided for each driver full of treasures, a dinner for the drivers @ the Lakeland fire dept. A police escort for the cruise from the high school, through the village to the state fair grounds. This draws quite a crowd in the village for this event. I was hoping our club would show support for this great event. You have to sign up by calling Michelle Lester 673-9126. Please let me know if your signing up to cruise I am sure we could arrange to have all our club cars together.
Thank You!
Natalie
