Originally formed in the great bounteous Midwest region of the United States "Mahjongg" began as a simple experiment between The Grid and The Sphere. To attract the brood orientation of the young mind, Mahjongg knew the only way to spread Kontpab's message was by forming a musiK band. This ever-expanding Sect uses "irratainment" to teach the warnings and Revelations of the almighty god Kontpab. Kontpab basically warns the human race of the mass "funneling" of the populace minds into The Grid. Once trapped in The Grid themselves, Kontpab instructed Mahjongg to make a pilgrimage to Chicago, IL., where they would form their first "warning orbs," at local art spaces and bars, and in turn be shown the light that is The Sphere. It was during this time that the Machinegong EP was recorded, and their first attempt to leave Kontpab's message sublimated in the patricians of the clubs was a success. Kontpab showed Mahjongg that The Grid's seemingly well-defined rules and laws could in fact be used against The Grid itself.

For a generation of Guelph music fans, Royal City was something akin to a supergroup. From his early teens, band ringleader, Aaron Riches had been a figurehead of the city's hardcore punk scene, fronting numerous politically charged punk bands and promoting DIY gigs (including one of Fugazi's first Canadian shows). At the same time, while bands like the Constantines were still gestating, the Jim Guthrie Quintet was a go. A local lo-fi recording guru, Jim had assembled a hot-shit band including the in-demand duo of bassist Simon Osborne and drummer Nathan Lawr to play his experimental pop epics. In 1999 or so, Aaron sought out Jim to help him make a new record at Jim's home studio.

Washington, DC Area Based All Lesbian Party Band Wicked Jezabel Celebrates Win of Washington Area Music Association "Fan Favorite" Award.

9 February – Bob Mould has announced a string of dates leading up to the release of Life and Times on April 7^th,including an intimate, acoustic appearance at Hollywood’s Hotel Café on March 2^nd and an electrified set at the famed Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival with the Bob Mould Band on April 18th. Additionally, on March 11, Mould will join Patti Smith, Calexico, Jolie Holland and many others at Carnegie Hall to pay tribute to the music of R.E.M. Proceeds from the event go to fund music programs for underprivileged students.

2009 promises to be a busy year for Mould. The release of the first single “I’m Sorry Baby…” on March 3^rd on iTunes will give fans a taste of what to expect from Life and Times, a guitar-driven, breathtakingly honest record that harkens back to his first solo release, the universally acclaimed Workbook. The Christmas Lights is the brainchild of 26 year-old Kenny Tompkins. Tompkins has worked as singer/songwriter and producer for several projects including The Trend and The Royal Army as well as recording and touring as a solo artist. In 2007 The Christmas Lights released a split with Baltimore-based duo Emil titled 10 Paces. This record was received positively by independent press and fans alike for its mix of 8-bit sugar-pop and experimental noise construction. The recent full-length debut, Walk Like A Human (Pro-Gravity Records/RARC), is a mix of ambience, harsh distortion, three-part harmony vocals, and odd-yet-dance-friendly time signatures. It was written, recorded, mixed and mastered by Kenny Tompkins at the RARC in Frostburg, Maryland from January to November 2007.

The Antlers will be hitting the road this Spring, touring down the East Coast and toward Austin, TX for this year's SXSW, then back up through the midwest on their way home. The tour will kick off with a hometown record release show at Brooklyn's Union Hall, where they'll be performing their new album Hospice in its entirety with a slew of guest musicians. Hospice will be self-released on March 3rd, though The Antlers have now made physical copies available for pre-order through their website , and will begin shipping the record out in late February.

Hospice is the follow-up to 2007's nuanced, upbeat In the Attic of the Universe, which became The Antlers' unexpected under-the-radar breakthrough thanks to blog word-of-mouth. Hospice chronicles The Antlers' evolution from detailed dream pop to densely layered shoegaze, from solo effort to band. Beginning as Peter Silberman's solo bedroom arrangements and recordings, this upcoming release marks the first time Silberman assembled a group of friends to contribute: Darby Cicci (trumpet, bowed banjo), Justin Stivers (bass), Michael Lerner (drums), and Sharon Van Etten (guest vocals). Cicci and Lerner remain as core members of the live band.

In September, The Band released a free download of "Two", the first single off of the new album. The track quickly earned adoration from the blogosphere, landing spots on numerous playlists and best-of lists. (It charted high on music blog aggregator Elbo.ws' list of most frequently-posted tracks, and ranked as Pop Tarts Suck Toasted's #1 single of 2008.) Tibet House US Keeps The Spirit of Tibetan Culture Alive at Annual Concert

February 4^th, 2009- New York, NY—With an image of Tibet’s Potala Palace hung prominently on the Carnegie Hall stage, the 19^th Annual Tibet House Benefit Concert was a beautiful night of music, culture and poetry featuring stand out performances by Patti Smith, Steve Earle, Antibalas, Angelique Kidjo, Keb’ Mo’, Vampire Weekend, The National, Techung and the Lhasa Spirits. Curating the night’s event was musical director, Philip Glass with help from a beaming President of the organization, Robert Thurman.

The Tibet House US is an organization that aims to preserve and promote the culture of Tibet, and last night’s concert was a testament of how music can bring a community together to promote and evoke change.

Antibalas kicked off the evening, bringing the house to their feet with a bombastic performance of Afro-beat rhythms and song. Joining them was legendary vocalist Angelique Kidjo for a stirring rendition of “Gimme Shelter.” Following two song set from Angelique that included a collaboration with Keb’ Mo’, Zack Glass showcased his vocal and songwriting talents on the historic stage. Up next were two of independent rocks finest- Vampire Weekend and The National. Brooklyn’s The National debuted 2 extraordinary new tracks entitled, “Karamazov” and “Wake Up Your Saints.” A night honoring Tibetan culture would not be complete without its native music. Techung gave a moving performance of song, “Loc Dro” (Let’s Go Back) where he referenced our recent Presidential inauguration, and said, “I too hope that Tibet can witness something like this one day.” No stranger to the Tibet House Benefit Concert on the Carnegie stage, Patti Smith made it a family affair when her daughter, Jesse Smith accompanied her on piano for two compositions written by Jesse, with spoken word performed by Patti. Modern blues-man Keb’ Mo’, was up next on his trademark acoustic guitar, followed by Grammy-Award winning Steve Earle singing for the first time “God Is God”, a song he wrote for Joan Baez. Steve interjected, “I have a pretty great job!” bringing the audience to laughter. Closing the show, was Patti Smith and her Band paying tribute to the anniversary of the death of one of rock n’ roll’s most tragic losses, Buddy Holly. The show closed, just as it began with the crowd coming to their feet for a joyous rendition of The Four Tops “Reach Out” with Patti encouraging audience participation. The audience stayed on their feet as the all-star lineup returned to the stage for the finale, joining Patti on her iconic track “People Have the Power.”

The eagerly anticipated 3^rd solo record from Chris Cornell, entitled Scream, will be released this Spring, on March 10^th, via Interscope Records. Best known as the acclaimed lead singer and songwriter for Soundgarden and Audioslave, Cornell and producer Timbaland have created a 13-track, inventive new work which looks to spearhead a brave new world of cross-genre collaboration.

The two artists were introduced at the suggestion that Timbaland create remixes for Cornell’s 2007 solo album, Carry On. Not content to merely remix a few songs, Timbaland proposed that they record an entire album. Javelina reveals album details for upcoming record

Philadelphia's Javelina (pronounced "ha-va-'lE-na") are preparing their sophomore release for Translation Loss Records and will hit Chicago this March to spend a week with Sanford Parker at Volume Studios (Pelican, Rwake, Nachtmystium, Minsk) and will be mastered by Mick Mullin at Super 8 Studios (Intronaut, Mastodon, Fight Amp). The band will be recording nine original tunes for their Translation Loss follow up to 2008's self-titled release along with a Buzzv*en cover that will be featured on a upcoming tribute record. Youth Group to Release The Night Is Ours on April 7

For their new record, The Night Is Ours, Australian stars Youth Group decided to forgo the more traditional approach employed for their previous records. Over the period of a couple of months in late 2007, the band holed up in a near-derelict 1920s mess hall on Sydney’s harbor. They decided against traditional studio procedures and turned the vacated building into a studio, bringing in all of their own gear to create an inimitable recording environment which allowed them to work at their own pace.

As bassist Patrick Matthews explains, “We also deliberately waited until we were in our studio and worked them up one at a time till we had them finished and recorded, so that the moment of creation was also the moment of recording. With the last record we found that some of the early demos had a spark that couldn’t be recreated in the final studio.”

This space allows for a record, that, albeit full of polished songs that stay stuck in your head for days, captures a kind of emotional intimacy that can often be lost in post-production. This is music built around strong hooks and insightful verses, bringing to mind bands like the Replacements, the Smiths, and fellow Aussies the Church and the Triffids, as well as contemporaries like Death Cab For Cutie, the Shins, Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Ra Ra Riot. It’s melody-driven rock that puts frontman Toby Martin’s clear, expressive voice at the forefront of the songs without taking away from the band’s masterful instrumental work.

Speaking through actions is traditionally the task of self-assured, moral men adhering to a higher standard than lip service. Applying the same status to a rock-n-roll band is a woeful misstep but, at the same time, there is a similarity in the self-assurance it takes to maintain an instrumental rock band these days. Audiences are used to the bombast and beauty of Sigur Ros, the muscular U2-isms of Maserati and the soundtrack-worthy composition of Explosions In The Sky. Each speak to that particular portion of the human soul which seeks foundation and inspiration. The problem is the field of instrumental bands is becoming more and more crowded so why should you care about a band called A. Armada out of Athens, GA? Because A. Armada speaks to other needs.

On Anam Cara, the band's first proper record, A. Armada weaves its sound through ringing guitars dipped in echo and a rhythm section that serves more as propellant than mere support. The pieces shift from somber genteelness to intense consideration to soft cradling. This isn’t music to conquer the world by; this is music to conquer oneself with. But if you ask the band about this they’ll probably give you a blank stare. That is, really, the whole point; in making music for themselves they’ve inadvertently made it for you.

While Asobi Seksu's creative core explored music at an early age (lead vocalist/keyboardist Yuki Chikudate got standing ovations at child prodigy recitals when she was just 8; guitarist/vocalist James Hanna bounced between sludgy hardcore and Mogwai-schooled post-rock in his teens), their potential 'career' wasn't put into perspective until a stint at the Manhattan School of Music. And by put into perspective, we mean finding out what they didn't want to do.

"It was good to have something musical to do all day, since most of my bands were like, 'Yeah, maybe we'll practice on Saturday or something,'" explains Hanna. "Playing someone else's music all the time seemed robotic after a while, though."

"It was a miracle I graduated at all," adds Yuki. "I love playing the piano, but three hours of it—breaking it down, measure by measure, note by note—makes my mind go numb."

Soon after escaping the joyless world of sheet music and classical composition, Hanna began tackling dreamy-but-disorienting soundscapes for the first time. He quickly shifted his focus from singing to starry-eyed chords, however, with Yuki falling into the frontwoman position without missing a beat. The problem was trying to be an actual band, as in a fully functioning quartet that tours and records together. Asobi Seksu 1.0 lasted between 2004's self-titled, learn-as-we-go-along debut and the spring of 2005. Hanna and Chikudate gave it a go with another bassist and drummer for their critically-acclaimed breakthrough, 2006's Citrus LP, but it didn't take long to realize that lineup was doomed as well.

Junior Boys Set To Release New Album April 7, 2009

We're here to tell you that Begone Dull Care, the remarkable new album from the duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus, professionally known as Junior Boys, is set for release on March 24th in their native Canada, with the US to follow on April 7th. The album's release will be preceded by its lead single, "Hazel" on 12" and digital formats.

After a well-earned break after nearly two solid years of activity around the band's last album, the group spent most of 2008 focused on the completion of a new album, with Greenspan working in the band's new studio/HQ/bar complex in Hamilton, Ontario and the recently-married Didemus telecommuting from his new home of Berlin, Germany. The only distractions from the task at hand were a DJ mix for Get Physical, an indirect Grammy nomination with Carl Craig for his incredible remix of "Like A Child" and Greenspan's many vocal contributions to the latest Morgan Geist album, Double Night Time.

Begone Dull Care is the band's third album, following the critical and commercial successes of Last Exit (2004) and So This Is Goodbye (2006). The title is a reference to a short film by the pioneering Oscar-winning Scottish-Canadian animator and electronic composer, Norman McLaren, who was a big influence on the conception and creation of this album. McLaren may not be as well-known today, but his influence has been seen by nearly anyone whose been raised on the early works of the Children's Television Workshop. McLaren was especially fond of direct film animation (the technique of physically manipulating or painting on film frame by frame) as is the case with "Begone Dull Care" and stop-start animation (as displayed in his classic, "Neighbours").

Blackout Beach's Skin of Evil is out today

Blackout Beach is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (from Frog Eyes and Swan Lake), and Skin of Evil is his second full-length. Originally slated for a Dec. 2008 release, the record sees the light of day today, Jan. 20, 2009. Skin of Evil is remarkable in the sense that a. it contains a story, and b. it sticks to the story; a rare occurrence in these free times. "Donna" is the subject, and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song (Donna gets her song, too). Composed, played and recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the dark side of the heady proto-punk Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner, David Thomas) with a minimal, textural & almost Suicide-ish sense of pop form and the experimental nature of recent Scott Walker works.

Some thoughts / notes on Skin of Evil by Dan Bejar:

- I believe Skin of Evil is the best record I will hear all year, but let's not get into that.

- A frame of reference for something like this might be:
Goofy American babbler (Jerry Lee Lewis/Dennis Quaid) meets the highest, the most harrowing of modernist Euro nightmare (The Drift ) -- By this I guess I mean that there can be no frame of reference, for these two things have never met before, and external forces work hard to make sure they never do, but somehow the sonic space created for this set of singing happened, and feels familiar, doesn't give me the willies. Maybe it's 'cause Scott Walker has never hinted at expressing an interest in the traditions of rocknroll guitar (neither does Carey but it can really sound like he must when he plays)

Canadian director Bruce LaBruce, the man behind such gay-themed, controversial films as Hustler White and The Raspberry Reich recently premiered his latest and most accomplished film to date, Otto; Or Up With Dead People (TRAILER) at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art in October, 2008. Obviously, John Waters was in attendance.

The film is a brand new, exceptional addition to the zombie genre that renounces the most obvious clichés, with LaBruce letting his protagonist – gay punk zombie Otto – ramble and roam the streets of Berlin until he finds himself cast for a low budget flick. Wrapping up a traveling nationwide theatrical run this month, Otto will make its debut on DVD in February.

Ting Tings Announce Spring US Tour

The Ting Tings are set to headline a national tour of North America this spring.. The 22 city tour will kick off in New York, NY on March 16^th at Webster Hall and run through April 15^th in San Francisco, CA at The Fillmore (see below for full itinerary). The Ting Tings live show is renowned for it’s upbeat and enjoyable vibe, the Philadelphia Inquirer raved “They are a stone cold gas, trading in kicky-cool, post-everything hybrid of punk, dance, pop and rap combined with an innate sexiness, impeccable style and an irrefutable ‘get down’ imperative.”

As she became an adult, UK-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and incorrigible eccentric Helena Costas brought her vision into focus. Born in London to Greek Cypriot parents, Helena learned violin from ages 7 to 13. Later, she taught herself guitar and keyboards. All the while, she developed a unique inner language and logic, rich with unconscious resonance, mythic allusions and complex food analogies. (Not unlike Prince, after a fashion.) She wrote songs incessantly, and learned the art of production, using the studio as an instrument. Meanwhile, she developed her confidence by playing constant gigs around London, where she faced demanding audiences and learned to improvise.

In 2003, she began mailing her home recordings to the esteemed artist and producer Danger Mouse. As his international fame grew, the pair kept in touch. They discovered a natural affinity and decided to collaborate, naming their project Joker's Daughter after one of Helena's many porous artistic personae. Helena describes Joker's Daughter as “a dualistic character” who “draws from the serious to turn it into humor.”

Helena's striking melodies and rich, sensory lyrics reveal the depth, passion and prankishness in her psyche. Ohio rock trio Heartless Bastards return with their third album The Mountain on February 3 via Fat Possum. Following the critical acclaim of their two previous albums Stairs and Elevators and All This Time, fans have a lot to look forward to with The Mountain.

In true ascetic discipline, Heartless Bastards' Erika Wennerstrom moved to Austin, Texas in 2007 for a change of inspirational scenery and a new recording project. THE TITLE MAY SUGGEST A DREAMSTATE, but rest assured, Daniel Lenz is awake, aware, and making the tracks that may very well be the soundtrack to your life. This isn’t just a bold way at predicting your immediate affection for his debut solo album, Stuck In A Dream, but if you’ll simply joggle your recent-to-immediate memory you may find an almost instinctual connection with his music. Was it the movie trailer you clicked on or did you hear it in the cinema? Did it help you get to the next level of that video game or did it influence you to make a special purchase? Better yet, maybe it was booming in the background for a bootycall in the bathroom stall of a Hollywood nightclub? Yeah, that must’ve been it!

Max Tundra, real name Ben Jacobs, is an English multi-instrumental musician, singer and music producer. He has released two well-received albums for Domino Records: Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be (2000) and Mastered By Guy At The Exchange (2002). He released his third album, Parallax Error Beheads You on Nov. 18, 2008 in the US. He will play a pair of shows in NYC next week, at Bowery Ballroom and Le Poisson Rouge which mark his first time ever playing New York. He was one of the last ever musicians to record a Peel Session on John Peel's radio show before Peel's death. He hosts a weekly radio show on Resonance FM, called Max Tundra's Rotogravure.

He put on a mask, wrapped himself up in tape, and played forty minutes of music made mostly using Amiga sample tracker software from the late 1980s. There was virtuosic melodica playing, Pointer Sisters-style singing, and an eight-minute version of "So Long, Farewell" from The Sound Of Music. I was wasted and ended up passing out on a beach in my underwear. When the sun rose, I woke up with dried merengue and sand glued to my hair, and in a daze, I realized that I had just witnessed nothing less than the best music performance of my life.

What sets Max Tundra apart from any other band in the world is his attention to detail. This album is impossibly full of ideas, seeking out every imaginable sound in the world and giving each their own curtain call. When you listen to this album, you'd think that it was made by an eccentric millionaire, with every name-brand pop music producer in the world contributing their own two seconds of material. Upon closer inspection, you'd realize that it's been six years since Mastered By Guy At The Exchange, in that time, Max probably hasn't had a single good night's sleep.

I can't compare this record to any record I've ever heard before. Even Max's previous records are a distant echo. It is dance music, it is discourse, it is teen sex comedy, it is a video game, it is a dance troupe, it is a thirteen course meal with Amontillado. It is shock and awe. Listen and be humbled.

About the Commodore Amiga 500 by Max Tundra

There are no modern-day computers on this record. My PC is strictly for emails and Photoshopping the words Max Tundra into Coldplay line-ups. The main technology behind this and all of my albums has been the Commodore Amiga 500 - bestselling home computer at the time - running a $1 public domain software tracker program. The sounds don't emerge from the Amiga itself however; the machine is used to control various synths, samplers and the like. I look at colums of numbers all day on the screen of a black and white television; these digits relate to pitches, durations and tones. A lot of the noises on my record are real; the cello, bass guitar, drums, piano, trumpet and others are all rehearsed and played by me, but sometimes I will use realistic fake versions of these noises. Each song is recorded in a different way; drumkits are recorded on mono cassette recorders twice, then stuck together on the left and right of a mix; string arrangements are planned and then layered up; each note of an electric guitar is sampled so that it can be sequenced in ways too complicated for my fat fingers to play at full speed. And then I have a cup of tea and sing my heart out.

Jamie Cullum Hits Golden Globes Sunday On Heels Of Eastwood Collaboration Nod

Golden Globe nominee Jamie Cullum -- -- the Grammy nominated singer, pianist, and composer with sales of over five million albums worldwide -- will attend the awards show this Sunday, January 11 and walk the red carpet. Cullum is nominated for "Best Original Song" for "Gran Torino" from the film of the same name, which he co-wrote with the films director and star Clint Eastwood.

After touring almost non-stop for five years, MONO hibernated for over a year to focus solely on writing Hymn To The Immortal Wind. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up.

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along flutes, and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet opening moments.

While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of MONO’s music, the dynamic shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance these elements so masterfully has become MONO’s strongest virtue.

To celebrate, they are bringing their infamous, face-melting live show to the esteemed Lincoln Center in New York City for one night only, backed by the Wordless Music Orchestra, conducted by Jeff Milarsky. Melissa Auf der Maur Debuts short film at Sundance, Announces new multi media concept album & 3-song EP

Modern day renaissance woman Melissa Auf der Maur will be screening Out Of Our Minds, her short film in collaboration with filmmaker Tony Stone, at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Auf der Maur, whose impressive résumé includes stints as the bass player for Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, is a celebrated solo musician and an accomplished photographer whose work has appeared in exhibitions and publications worldwide.

Out Of Our Minds is a multimedia concept album three years in the making which incorporates an album, film, comic and website – all to be unveiled in full later this year. The film portion of this impressive body of work was accepted to the Sundance Film Festival as part of the New Frontier Program.

Three time periods, one connection: Blood. The central characters are a woman (Melissa Auf der Maur) and her car. The 28-minute film follows her in a strange ritual that climaxes in a collision between past and future, crashing through the gateway to parallel worlds in the same forest. A fantasy world where a Viking heart, a car crash and a bleeding forest connect. Using music rather than dialogue, the film tells a universal tale in striking optics. Borrowed from mythology, the Hunt for the Heart is the eternal quest envisioned in Out Of Our Minds. Wolves In The Throne Room announce new EP, new album, tour dates

In February Southern Lord will proudly release the vinyl only version of the new Wolves In The Throne Room EP entitled Malevolent Grain, featuring two brand new tracks from the Pacific Northwest organic black metallers. Conspiracy Records will offer a limited edition picture disc of the 12" for Europe, while Southern Lord will release a black 180-gram version worldwide. Additionally the band will press a limited CD version for tour purposes only. The EP features the band's newly designed logo crafted by renowned artist Christophe Szpajdel, designer of black metal band logos for Kult Ov Azazel, Emperor, Moonspell and other international acts.

The third WITTR full-length Black Cascade will follow, to be released on March 31st on Southern Lord Records. More info will follow soon on this wholly organic black-drone masterwork. Both the EP and the full-length were recorded to 2-inch tape by Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer in Seattle this Winter. The new recordings are the first to feature their new guitar player Will Lindsay (Middian) who had previously served as the band's touring bass player, in addition to longtime members, brothers Nathan and Aaron Weaver.

The band will tour Europe beginning in late January, along with three select US dates. More extensive touring through 2009 is also imminent. In less than three years, The Coathangers, Julia Kugel (guitar/vocals), Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals), Candice Jones (keyboard/vocals), and Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) have grown from a band of girlfriends buying the cheapest instruments an Atlanta pawn shop could offer, to a group of formidable, adaptable performers. The quartet has shared the stage or toured with bands such as Deerhunter, Atlas Sound, Jay Reatard, The Strange Boys , The Black Lips and The Vivian Girls among others.

Here is the group as a group, an unbreakable unit – the chemistry and magic of all component parts interacting – all the girls or none.

You could look at them and think they’re this way or that, but they will not conform. These are four really different people who have bonded beyond the point of just being friends. You might think you can pin them down, but they don’t care. Their fashion isn’t contrived, their music feels like music for music’s sake because that’s exactly what it is natural, voluntary, spontaneous, impulsive, intuitive and entirely better for it.

“We write all the songs together, trying everything out within a day; we switch instruments, waste time, thrive on building pressure,” says Julia Kugel, “every song is an art project, a starting over, a Scramble.”

Songs like “Bury Me” and “Time Passing” use chanted vocals to approach a kind of personal sloganeering – like Huggy Bear, shot with syncopated voices, but minus the political fury. In “Pussywillow,” the melodic chop of the guitar brings the chorus, “This means nothing to you. It means nothing to me, too. To me, me.” lifting the call-and-response action from bratty disgust to melancholy realization, then back again.

There’s a definitive strength in the scrambled vernacular of the band’s songwriting. Do they bring the party, as rumor has it? Absolutely. It’s an exhausting time. But what these ladies’ have to give, both performing live, and on record, leads to a beautiful exhaustion: a feeling both empty and full, like at the end of intense physical activity, when your body is burned, yet charged.

Strip away the music-biz pretense like that and it leaves you with only the things that are simple, stunning, and true. The Coathangers are one of those things. Start the party.

The live set includes songs from three previous recordings, Rest, 55:12, and their EP 27:36.

N.A.S.A. To Tour North America This February

N.A.S.A. (North America/South America), and their worldwide debut The Spirit of Apollo is set to be released on Anti- on February 17, 2009. N.A.S.A is an ongoing creative collaboration between two lifelong music aficionados, Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon, and their friends, friends of friends and musical heroes. The pair will tour the US and Canada starting late next month.

While N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and contains a number of superstar artists from both coasts of the US, it is about as far from a tension-building geographical showdown as a record can get. Rather, The Spirit of Apollo was born with the righteous goal of bringing people together through music and art, and that is exactly what masterminds Squeak E, Clean and DJ Zegon have done.

Unexpected collaborations abound on the eighteen-track release. Tom Waits growls over Kool Keith, Karen O taunts while Ol’ Dirty Bastard gives shout-outs to Wu Tang and N.A.S.A. from the grave, and David Byrne, Chuck D and others expound on the evils of “Money.” In spite of the range of performers, the pairings seem organic, inspired and make perfect sense on the first listen, never coming off as ironic or impulsive.

Glasvegas In Stores Today, Kick Off US Tour

Glasvegas are back in the US and the band's S/T release is in stores today! The band celebrated their release with an apperance on Letterman last night and are hitting the road for a few dates across the US this month. The physical album will include two bonus tracks: "The Pretties Thing on Saltecoats Beach" and "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" a cover of the Korgies track.

One listen to this incredible album and it’s easy to see why everyone is talking about Glasvegas. Proclaimed by NME as "Britan's Best New Band," the combination of their incredibly sonic and layered music, along with James Allan’s heartbreaking lyrics and vocals has the band poised to win over the US as well. Glasvegas was co produced by singer James Allan and Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Muse) in Brooklyn, NY over the Winter and Spring of 2008. The band also recently stole away to Transylvania to record a Christmas EP, which was availble over the holidays. Below find the tour dates, more will be announced soon.
