      <title>The New Dover Ferry Photos Forums are open for business!</title>
      <description>
Hi, following near on five months of tireless work evaluating, developing and testing its with great pleasure I hereby announce the New Dover Ferry Photos Forums are open for business! We certainly do hope you like the results.

I am afraid due to the failure of the previous host all previous members will have to re-register an account with us to continue posting and using the new boards features. This can be done by going to our new address www.doverferryphotosforums.co.uk and clicking on the register button.

The old forums have since been closed down to allow me to do some maintenance to make them read only and these will act as our forum online archive for the messages posted between 2006-2008.

I would like to say a Big Thank You to Paul Bilbrough for investing his time (over 1000 Hours) and for his hard work and dedication, if it wasn't for him we wouldn't be able to offer this brilliant facility to our members.

I look forward to seeing you all on our forums soon.

      <title>News: New look website launched!</title>
      <description>
Hello everybody if you head over to the main site at www.doverferryphotos.co.uk you will notice that the site has had an overhaul but let me explain that this isn't just a cosmetic change.

At the end of last year I upgraded my computer system and during the transfer of the site from the old machine to the new machine it some how became corrupted. As a consequence of this the menu system failed and the page layouts were lost.

As this was a locally stored version of the site it didn't effect what you saw on the web but it made updates very difficult as every time a page was opened on the host machine in MS Front Page there were numerous coding errors and just uploading a single page took a lot longer than it should.

The only course of action was to rebuild the site on a page by page basis. As I wanted the new site to be uniform across all pages I decided to do this in one hit instead of doing it over a period of time.

So after 37 hours of work (Yes I was counting ) the site is now fully operational on my machine and the new version is now sitting on the Internet.

The Changes

* The site should now be cross browser compatible and should work on IE7, IE8 RC1, FireFox3, Safari and Google Chrome.

* RSS has been integrated into the Homepage and the Site Updates page. a link also appears on the top of every page pointing towards our RSS News feed.

* New menu system - Yes I know it looks like the old one but that's how it's supposed to be as I liked the old one.

* AIS for the Dover Straits has now been integrated into the site thanks to the people at Marinetraffic.com. It can be found at www.doverferryphotos.co.uk/ais.htm or from the menu.

* The site is now easily updatable thanks to these changes and new material will be appearing very soon.

A Big Thank You

As many of you are aware the state of the global financial markets mean that disposable income is very difficult to come across nowadays and that also applies to yours truly.

Running this website costs roughly £110 a year and things were looking very touch and go for me being able to afford the next 2 years worth of hosting.

Thanks to some very generous benefactors the sites hosting account has now been renewed for a further 2 years.

I would just like to thank these benefactors for there offer of financial support without them the site would have been dead and buried on Friday the 13th February (how apt ) with little sign of a return until the financial situation had improved.

Finally I would like to thank all our visitors/forum members for bearing with us during these uncertain times and I look forward to bringing you all some more exciting news over the coming weeks.

All the best

Ray Goodfellow

      <title>Seasons Greetings</title>
      <description>
Hi,

On behalf of myself and my moderator team it's time for us to wish our 270 members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I think it is well said that the year 2008 will be remembered by the ferry and cruise industries as the year the bubble burst thanks to the global credit crunch and the sky high cost of fuel.

The Port of Dover and the short sea routes have already seen there first big casualty with the collapse of Speed Ferries. The collapse has resulted in the loss of over 100 jobs locally and being so close to Christmas it's a double blow for not just Speed Ferries employees and it's customers but the community as a whole. Additionally Carnival Cruise Lines have decided to pull out of Dover after only one season blaming the high cost of flights from America.

We all hope that that both industries manage to get back on track during the current financial storm but I fear there maybe a few more casualties before this storm has passed.

There are a few faint glimmers on the horizon with LD Lines opening two routes from Dover in 2009, one to Dieppe and the other to Boulogne. Additionally the cruise operator Holland America Lines has announced that they will be taking up some of the vacant berthing slots at the Dover Cruise Terminal with there new flagship the `M.v Eurodam'.

Forum News

Now a brief update on the forums. As a lot of you are aware following last weeks email there have been a number of problems on the forums over the past 7 days.

Our forum hosts `Iforumer' have basically disappeared off the face of the earth. There support desk has been closed and the support forums have been filled with spam registrations and messages. Following the outage last Sunday (14/12/2008) the administration team have been bombarded with up to 20 fake registrations a day which have been deleted.

At the moment our forums are still operational but I am afraid I cant guarantee how much longer they will remain.

With this in mind its my intention to close the forums to new member registrations in the New Year. The team have already started to investigate a new home for our community and it's thanks to the many messages of support I have received from our members over the last 12 months that we have decided to keep things going.

With the loss of the Iforumer network it's impossible for us to get a backup of the current forum and as the forum's founder I am deeply saddened that when our present boards are closed it may mean the loss of 2 years hard work from all those involved.

I hope that our new home (when it is found and built) and with your continued support will give us the stability to offer a world class forum to our members for many years to come. I will obviously keep you all abreast of the situation in the New Year when everything has been sorted out.

I would like to sign off this email by thanking you as members for your continued support and I would also like to thank my moderator team for there work over the last 12 months.

I would particularly like to thank Nigel Thornton for his continual hard work under some very difficult circumstances in supplying material to the Past and Present section on the main site. Additionally i would like to thank Paul Cloke and forum member `Zillertal' for there offers of assistance in finding a new home for us.

Finally I would like to thank my other half for her understanding of the other love in my life and what to some people may be a rather strange hobby. I would also like to thank her for giving me so much mental and emotional support over the last 6 months.

Seasons Greetings and Wishing you all the best for 2009.

Ray Goodfellow

      <title>News: Forums now online</title>
      <description>
Forum News: The forums are now available again following the earlier outage and appear to be operating normally.
There have been further reports on the internet today with regards to Iforumer foundering so an active search will now commence for a new home for our forums. As a backup is not forthcoming a new forum will have to be built but at least we now have access to our membership database.

      <title>News: Forums currently offline</title>
      <description>
Forum News: The forums are currently offline and I am afraid I cant give you any information to when or if they will be available again.
There have been various reports on the internet with regards to the hosts `Iforumer' going under and I am afraid if this is the case there is little I can do about it. A backup of the forum was requested and paid for earlier this year and the money was taken but no backup has ever appeared, this is currently being investigated by PayPal as it appears that this has happened to a number of parties. Iforumer have always had a tendency of doing things on there server and not informing there board owners until after the event, so I am hoping that this is the usual case but I do have to say I have my doubts. If this is the end of the current forums it will take a while to rebuild them from scratch as the forums are hosted on a Phppbb2 platform which is now obsolete and I haven't got a clue how to build one on Phpbb3 :-(. It will also mean that our entire membership will have to rejoin and we will have to start from nothing. I will try and keep you all updated if there is a change to the current situation.

      <title>RSS Feed re-introduced</title>
      <description>
Following a break of nearly 12 months an RSS Feed has been re-introduced.

Originally trialed last year It was decided not to use RSS due to my limited understanding of the technology at the time. I am however a lot better informed of how it works and how easy it is use and as a consequence a feed will run alongside the websites main update page.
