      <title>Product Placement</title>
      <description>
"Product Placement" is a cute and funny short video featuring many former advertising icons talking candidly about their jaded view of advertising. In fact, though, the audio and video come from two very different sources, and their combination was facilitated by the use of a Creative Commons license. Four years ago, a group called the Anti-Advertising Agency (http://www.antiadvertisingagency.com) conducted hours of interviews with people on the street as part of a project called the Portable Sound Unit, and released the entire collection under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license. Animator Matt Niinimäki found these clips, and set them all to animation.

      <title>Watermelon Nights</title>
      <description>
"Watermelon Nights" is one episode of the brilliant and hilarious internet series "Meth Minute 39," made by animator Dan Meth for Channel Frederator. The episodes vary widely in terms of content and style, but all of them are well-made and fun to watch. (A word of warning: although "Watermelon Nights" is about as innocent as anything you'll find on the internet, some of the other episodes have some crude themes and language.)

      <title>Sita Sings the Blues</title>
      <description>
"Sita Sings the Blues" is an epic and beautiful animated version by Nina Paley of the ancient Indian story of the Ramayana. This is her first feature-length film and a truly personal labor of love. It was reviewed extremely well, and performed fantastically at festivals, but its distribution was stalled by copyright concerns surrounding the use some of the music--music which is artistically integral to the movie. I really can't say enough about this movie, and I strongly encourage everybody to read her website, and find out more about the movie. (Especially Roger Ebert's glowing review!) The movie is presented here in 720p, but there's a 1080p version available on the website.

"Sita Sings the Blues" is released by Nina Paley under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 United States license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/us/).

      <title>Gustavo Dudamel and the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra</title>
      <description>
Although this video comes from the brilliant "TED Talks" series, it isn't the usual short and brilliant lecture. Instead, it features an absolutely inspiring performance of the second movement of Shastakovich's Symphony No. 10 and Arturo Márquez's Danzón No. 2 by the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra, led by Gustavo Dudamel. The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra consists of the top high school (!) musicians from an organization called "El Sistema," founded by 2009 TED Prize winner Jose Abreu. His speech on the successes of El Sistema can be found on the TED homepage, http://www.ted.com.

      <title>Star Wreck - In the Pirkinning</title>
      <description>
Probably the most epic open movie ever made (and the most popular Finnish movie of all time), Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is really a classic. Because it's truly funny and has pretty remarkable special effects, it's a bit hard to imagine that it's the work of a handful of friends, a handful of computers, and the support of the internet. Remarkably, this "no-budget" film has achieved some major success, and is now available on DVD from Universal Pictures. Also check out their next movie, Iron Sky, at www.ironsky.net.

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is released by Energia Productions under a Creative Commons Finland Attribution No-Derivatives Non-Commercial license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd-nc/1.0/fi/).

      <title>Rollin and Tumblin</title>
      <description>
"Rollin and Tumblin" is a 2006 entry into The 100 Second Film Festival and one of my favorites. As the name of the festival suggests, each video must be 100 seconds or shorter, each giving just a brief glimpse of its subject. All of the videos entered into the contest are released under Creative Commons licenses. Details about the festival, including how to enter and screenings, are located on the festival web page, at http://100seconds.org/ .

      <title>The Last Drug trailer</title>
      <description>
This is the trailer for the upcoming film "The Last Drug," scheduled to be released in December. The film, which will be released under a CC BY-SA license, is poised to be the first open source HD feature film: "all footage, project files, sounds, and special effects will be available" for anybody to work with. The film itself is described by the filmmakers as the sci-fi/cyberpunk story of three backpackers searching for one of the world's most powerful drugs.

      <title>Every Third Bite</title>
      <description>
"Every Third Bite" is a short documentary that looks at beekeeping and the phenomenon of Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD. It features, among other things, amazing shots of David Graves' spectacular Manhattan rooftop beekeeping operation. The documentary is part of the Eighth Annual Media That Matters Festival, an awesome film festival that releases all of its entrants under Creative Commons License.

      <title>The Corporation</title>
      <description>
The Corporation has been called Canada's most successful documentary ever. It has won 26 international awards, including the audience choice award at the Sundance Film Festival. The film examines the rise of the corporation in the last century to become the dominant institution of our society. Jumping off from the legal position that a corporation is a person, it explores the question "What kind of person is it?"

The film was originally released in 2004 through traditional channels, but it became very popular in illegal file-sharing circles, being downloaded over 500000 times. When the filmmaker, Mark Achbar, discovered this, he opted to harness that fan enthusiasm and released a "shareware" version, which is the one presented here.

The Corporation is presented in two parts, with an additional supplement of interviews.

UPDATE: We've had some issues with the last tracker (some people were reporting REALLY slow downloads, and it seems to have gone private) so now we're using a new one.

This stop-motion short by James Maduzia is a classic representative of the "brick films" community. Thousands of enthusiasts make and watch movies starring LEGOs or other plastic block toys. Many of these videos are shown on http://www.brickfilms.com, a site which has been active since 2000, or the newly launched http://www.bricksinmotion.com.

      <title>Big Buck Bunny</title>
      <description>
The latest release from The Blender Foundation, "Big Buck Bunny"'s tone is considerably lighter than the dark "Elephant's Dream." The interceding years have treated The Blender Foundation well, though, because this movie looks better than ever. All of the animation, from the lighter-than-air flaps of the butterfly wings to the furry fluffiness of the title character, was made by seven animators using open source software. This ~10 minute animation is presented here in 720p HD.

      <title>Pearl Jam - Life Wasted music video</title>
      <description>
This music video, made by the legendary rock group Pearl Jam and directed by Fernando Apodaca, was the product of ten months of shooting all over the world. It was nominated for an MTV video music award for best special effects (though none of them are digital!) and is likely the music video produced by a major record company to be released under a Creative Commons license.

      <title>The Elephant's Dream</title>
      <description>
Billed as "the world's first open movie," this strange animated short was produced using entirely open source tools. It's a dark and thought-provoking conversation between two interesting characters in a visually captivating and dynamic setting. Since it's release in 2006, (and the coincident release of all the elements under a Creative Commons license), it has received critical acclaim and numerous honors, including being on the first European HD DVD ever produced. Presented here in super high definition.
